"Usagi in Tears: A Glass Slipper for My Birthday" is the 12th episode of the 3rd season of the Sailor Moon anime and the 101st episode overall. It aired in Japan on July 2, 1994. The CWi English dub title for this episode is "Birthday Blues, Part 1" and it aired in North America on June 27, 2000.
Summary[]
It is June 30 and Usagi's 15th birthday, but she becomes furious when Mamoru forgets her birthday. Mamoru buys her an expensive pair of glass shoes but fails to realize that they are implanted with a Daimon Egg. Kaolinite steals Usagi's brooch and kidnaps Tuxedo Mask.
Plot[]
At the lab, Kaolinite notes to Professor Tomoe that she's certain their new target holds a talisman. Tomoe grants her his strongest Daimon for the mission.
Usagi meets the others in a park, informing them that it's her birthday, June 30. The girls appear uninterested, reminding her that even though it's her birthday, they still plan to study at the shrine at 4 pm. After leaving the park, Usagi notices a pair of glass slippers through a storefront window in the Juban District. Kaolinite watches from around the corner, as Usagi wishes to herself that Mamoru will buy her the slippers for her birthday. She then locates Mamoru, telling him she wants the slippers as a gift. He notes that Christmas is a long way away, and she slaps him after realizing he doesn't know what day it is, subsequently running off.
Usagi, who was crying alone by a fountain, is then approached by Haruka and Michiru. She tells them what happened, and they say that Mamoru should've remembered it was her birthday. Haruka then expresses her fondness for Usagi. Usagi runs off, realizing she's late for the study session, and Michiru mentions that Usagi has a very pure heart, and perhaps a talisman.
Before Usagi arrives at the shrine, Mamoru calls in an attempt to locate her, and during the call, Rei informs him that it's Usagi's birthday. When Usagi arrives, she's surprised to see that her friends planned her a birthday party, and they're in fact not studying today. Meanwhile, Kaolinite infuses the glass slippers with the Daimon egg, as Mamoru's on his way to buy them. The girls gifted Usagi a study book, and she says she wishes Mamoru got her a present. The girls point out to Usagi that Mamoru didn't forget her birthday, he simply didn't know when it was. Feeling guilty for slapping Mamoru, Usagi decides to find him and apologize.
Mamoru and Usagi find each other, and he gives her the slippers to try on. As Usagi puts her foot in the slipper, the Daimon is released. Mamoru charges at the Daimon but is knocked away. While struggling with the Daimon, Usagi attempts to transform, but her brooch is knocked out of her hand. The Daimon extracts Usagi's heart. With an intense light emulating from it, the Daimon notes that she holds a talisman, but the extraction is interrupted by a red rose thrown by Tuxedo Mask. Neptune and Uranus, watching from around a corner, debate whether or not they should go after the talisman, as Usagi would die without it. Tuxedo Mask temporarily stops the Daimon, and retreats with Usagi. She tells him about losing her brooch, but he insists it's too dangerous to go after when she holds a talisman and is the target. Kaolinite notices the brooch and recognizes it as Sailor Moon's, realizing her identity.
Kaolinite and the Daimon chase after Usagi and Tuxedo Mask and eventually catch them in a parking garage. Usagi contacts Luna for help, her contact device broken by Kaolinite immediately after. Watching from behind a pillar, Uranus decides that the talisman must be taken, even though it'd cost Usagi's life. Back at the shrine, the girls receive the message from Luna and begin making their way to the garage. Tuxedo Mask battles the Daimon, and Kaolinite reveals to Usagi that she has her transformation brooch, threatening to destroy it if she doesn't give up her pure heart crystal/talisman. Tuxedo Mask tries to help but becomes encased in glass by the Daimon. Usagi rushes over to him, Kaolinite laughing maniacally, the camera zooms out and the episode ends.

Changes from the Manga[]
- This episode is a filler. None of the scenes happened in the manga. Though the Sailor Senshi did celebrate Rei's birthday in the Infinity arc.
Dub Changes[]
- In the original, after learning that Usagi and Mamoru are going through relationship troubles, Haruka jokingly threatens to take the former for herself. In the Cloverway dub, Amara instead jokingly threatens to take Darien for herself.
- In the Viz dub, upon learning of Usagi’s birthday, Minako comments that the former is “one step closer to death”.
- In the Cartoon Network airing of this episode, a "To Be Continued..." message was added at the end of the episode.

- In the anime, this is the first time someone took Usagi's transformation brooch in order to keep her from transforming into Sailor Moon. In this episode, it was Kaolinite. The other incidence was in episode 110, where it was Haruka.
- Cenicienta (the Daimon's name) is the Spanish word for Cinderella, which is why she was associated with glass slippers/shoes.
- This is the first episode where none of the Inner Sailor Senshi, including Sailor Moon, appear transformed.
