"Sailor Moon Eternal" (also known as Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Crystal Season IV: Eternal The Movie) is a two part movie of the Sailor Moon Crystal franchise which adapts the Dream arc from the manga. It starts immediately after the events of Crystal Season III, and is followed by Sailor Moon Cosmos.

Both films debuted in Japanese theatres and later on June 3, 2021 were released worldwide on Netflix.[1]

Synopsis[]

A Pegasus appears before Usagi, Chibiusa, Mamoru, and Diana seeking a maiden who can help him just before a solar eclipse where the Dead Moon Circus makes an uncanny appearance in Juban and raises the suspicions of the Sailor Guardians.

Production[]

On June 30, 2017, it was unveiled that the Sailor Moon Crystal's fourth season would be adapted as a two-part theatrical anime movie.[2] On June 30, 2018, production was officially confirmed to have begun. The film was originally slated to be named Sailor Moon Crystal: The Movie -Dead Moon arc- but was eventually changed. Original creator Naoko Takeuchi is chief supervising the production.

The first part was originally set to be released in Japanese theatres on September 11, 2020[3], but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the release was pushed back to January 8, 2021. The second part was released in Japan on February 11, 2021.[4]

The Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Eternal The Movie Visual Book was released after both films' theatrical releases and contains cast and staff interviews, character designs, and other behind the scenes information.

Cast[]

See the cast on the Sailor Moon Crystal series page.

Music[]

Yasuharu Takanashi, who composed the music of the previous seasons of Sailor Moon Crystal, wrote the majority of this movie's soundtrack. The soundtrack was not released individually but instead was included as disks 3 and 4 of the Japanese Limited Edition Blu-ray release of the movie.

The movie's main theme is Moon Color Chainon which is sung by Momoiro Clover Z alongside the voice actresses of Usagi and the Inner Sailor Guardians. This song is the first ending theme for both parts of the film and appears in many of its trailers. It was initially released in two albums alongside the movie: Moon Color Chainon - Momoiro Clover Z Edition, and Moon Color Chainon - Eternal Edition. The second includes the other two ending themes.

The other two ending themes are new versions of the ending themes of the SuperS season of the 90's anime. Watashitachi ni Naritakute is sung by Yoko Ishida who was the singer of Maiden's Policy in the 90's anime. It is the second ending theme of Part 1. The second, "Rashiku" Ikimasho, is sung by Anza who was the first and longest serving actress of Sailor Moon in the musicals. It is the second ending theme of Part 2.

An album of new image songs was also released: Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Eternal - Eternal Collection. This album includes songs sung by the movie's Japanese voice actors and actresses while in character. Most of its songs are exclusive to that CD but its final track is Moon Effect which plays during the climax of Part II.

Plot[]

Part I[]

Chibiusa wakes up from bed and she soon finds herself waiting to watch the solar eclipse where the end of Season 3 left off. There Usagi, Chibiusa, Diana, and Mamoru hear a bell and they suddenly receive a vision from a pegasus asking for their help. Mamoru feels pain in his chest as the event begins. The Dead Moon Circus arrives on a flagship during the height of the eclipse and their bombastic entrance disappears as the light returns.

Meanwhile, the Inner Sailor Guardians saw the same announcement from the Circus and were confused about what had just happened. Phobos and Deimos help point to the arrival of a new enemy. Mamoru tells Chibiusa the park has too many people for Chibiusa to use her Space-Time Key to go home, so they explore town. There they notice "Dead Moon Circus" signs and the two girls guilt Mamoru into buying them matching Kalideoscopes. The park is still full so they decide to wait until tomorrow morning for Chibiusa to go back to the future and have a sleepover at Mamoru's Home. During it, Chibiusa mentions that Neo-Queen Serenity would tell her bedtime stories, and one of them was of a dark world inside a mirror that appears on the nights of a new moon. Chibiusa and Usagi also disagree and wish they had opposite ages.

At the Dead Moon Circus, Zirconia sits on her throne in front of a tiger, a hawk, and a fish. Her servants, the Amazoness Quartet (JunJun, VesVes, CereCere, and PallaPalla), appear, and PallaPalla uses an Amazon Stone to conjure a dark barrier around the city where the circus is.

That night, Chibiusa dreams of riding Pegasus, who gives her a bell, telling her to ring it if she needs him. His name is Helios and he needs the Golden Crystal to save Elysion. When Chibiusa wakes up, she still has the bell. She woke up early with Diana and decides to head back to the future. PallaPalla's barrier keeps Chibiusa and Diana from returning to the 30th century and she says and she wants to help Helios as he appears again. They and Usagi, Mamoru, Luna, and Artemis head for the command center under Game Center Crown.

PallaPalla senses the disturbance on her barrier and VesVes sends the tiger into the city to find the source which sends the town into a frenzy. Usagi and Chibiusa leave and attempt to stop the tiger, but find themselves unable to transform. They run and their Holy Grails appear and their broaches transform to upgraded forms, allowing them to transform into Super Sailor Moon and Super Sailor Chibi Moon once again but without weapons. VesVes and PallaPalla then arrive; VesVes sends the tiger back to the circus and PallaPalla summons nightmare creatures called Lemures to attack Sailor Moon and Sailor Chibi Moon. Sailor Chibi Moon summons Helios with the bell to give them weapons and he transforms their kaleidoscopes into their new magic weapons: the Moon Kaleido Scope and the Chibi Moon Kaleido Scope. These weapons enable them to use Moon Gorgeous Meditation to destroy the Lemures and PallaPalla's Amazon Stone as the two enemies retreat.

After Mamoru faints from another stabbing pain in his chest, PallaPalla and VesVes are unsure what to make of their new foes. PallaPalla uses a mirror to read Usagi and Chibiusa's thoughts and switches their ages, while Zirconia's eyeball servant, Zircon, spies on them. Queen Nehelenia takes note of the Silver Crystal and the reincarnated Sailor Guardians from the Silver Millennium from inside her mirror. Zirconia assures Nehelenia she remembers them, and Nehelenia tells her to let their nightmares take hold of them, saying she must have the Silver Crystal.

Minako, Ami, Rei, and Makoto meet the girls who have brought Mamoru to the Hospital. Mamoru's doctor is Ami's Mother, and the cause of his illness is determined to be an unusual shadow in his lungs. Mamoru heads home to rest as Usagi and Chibiusa are still age swapped. Helios appears before Chibiusa again and believes she is the chosen maiden he is looking for but she has doubts.

PallaPalla uses more Amazon Stones to turn the tiger, the hawk, and the fish into humans named Tiger's Eye, Hawk's Eye, and Fish Eye. Fish Eye volunteers to go first, and targets Ami, as both he and she are of water element. He opens a tropical fish store which Ami enters, and PallaPalla, pretending to work there, persuades her to buy a fish, which is Fish Eye in his animal form. Ami thinks about her Mother and Father as she tries to investigate this new enemy on her computer thinking about Setsuna's words.

That night, he sends Lemures to cover her home to make Ami experience a nightmare of her Mother and everyone around her rejecting her. When Ami resists and calls Usagi for help, Fish Eye pulls her into a mirror to stay in a peaceful underwater setting forever. As she is falling to the nightmare, Guardian Mercury appears and reminds her of her true dream and that there are a lot of people who care about her. The pep-talk gets Ami to resist and transform into Super Sailor Mercury with her Mercury Crystal, and uses Mercury Aqua Rhapsody with her Mercury Harp to break out of the mirror. Usagi and Chibiusa arrive and transform, regaining their original ages in the process, and destroy Fish Eye with Moon Gorgeous Meditation.

Sailor Chibi Moon then experiences self doubt thinking she'll never compare to Sailor Moon, and tells Helios this, suspecting that the maiden he seeks is not her, but Sailor Moon. Helios then learns Sailor Moon is Princess Serenity. Taking that as confirmation of her doubts, she runs away. As Chibiusa expresses her self-doubt in the rain, Helios kisses her, temporarily assuming a humanoid form, and saying she is very important and love is all around her. Helios is revealed to be astral projecting from a cage in Elysion, which has been corrupted and caged by Nehelenia, who taunts Helios from her mirror.

The day before the Dead Moon Circus opens, Rei questions her dream to run Hikawa Shrine in her Grandpa's place and is unsure of herself. He is sick so she is filling in for him. He reminisces to himself about how she met Phobos and Deimos as a child and has always been mysterious and will one day fly away from the shine and discover where she truly belongs.

When the Dead Moon Circus opens, everyone comes and split into groups to check it out. Rei is lured into a Mirror House by PallaPalla where a mirror displays a younger version of herself preying on her doubts as Tiger's Eye appears in the reflection as well. Akuryo Taisan doesn't work and Rei can't transform and starts to forget things as the Lemures give her a nightmare and she falls. Meanwhile, the Amazoness Quartet perform in the main circus tent and have more Lemures drain energy from the crowd for Zirconia to use to "revive" Nehelenia, with CereCere having kicked out Luna, Artemis, and Diana from the show. Phobos and Deimos break into the Mirror House and attack Tiger's Eye to save Rei forcing him to retreat inside the mirrors. They wake Princess Mars up and she sees them in their human forms for the first time and they grant Rei her Mars Crystal and Mars Arrow as she regains her determination. She transforms into Super Sailor Mars and, remembering Sailor Neptune's words, destroys Tiger's Eye with Mars Flame Sniper, breaking the spell over the Amazoness Quartet's audience. She meets the others and tells them about the enemy while the Quartet is angry and plans their next move.

Mamoru is still very sick, and hides the cause from Usagi trying to prevent her from worrying about him. He tells her to leave when she arrives bringing groceries. Juban is deteriorating and garbage is piling up.

Chibiusa can't stop thinking about Helios and goes to Makoto for advice. She and Chibiusa enter a herbal shop run by Hawk's Eye. He has always dreamed of owning a shop and realizing his dream, and Makoto says she shares the same dream as him. Hawk's Eye gives Makoto and Chibiusa rings that he says will ward off evil spirits. Chibiusa and Makoto spend time at together and it's revealed Makoto's parents died when she was young and her other dream is to get married and start a family of her own. She also wants to be like Haruka and Michiru and starts to doubt she's put in enough effort to achieve any of her numerous dreams.

Chibiusa gives her ring to Mamoru as Usagi waits outside scared he'll tell her to stay away again. Makoto returns to the herbal shop to tell Hawk's Eye she's afraid she won't be able to realize her dreams as long as she's a Sailor Guardian. She is attacked by Lemures inside the ring, exploiting her insecurity, and falls to nightmare. The Quartet arrive and gloat over the incapacitated Makoto. Inside her dream, Guardian Jupiter appears and reminds her she must protect everyone, and Makoto remembers Sailor Uranus's words as well. Makoto transforms into Super Sailor Jupiter with her Jupiter Crystal and the Quartet retreat. She defeats Hawk's Eye with Jupiter Oak Evolution using her new Leaves of Oak. Hawk's Eye accepts his defeat and is content that he was able to realize his dream, even telling Sailor Jupiter to realize her dreams out of respect for her before he and his shop disintegrate. Chibiusa and Usagi arrive and they soon notice Mamoru is in danger and they all rush to his home to save him.

There they find Helios trying to protect Mamoru. After Super Sailor Moon and Super Sailor Chibi Moon destroy the Lemures emerging from the ring Hawk's Eye gave Chibiusa, Mamoru coughs up blood revealing the sickness he was trying to hide. Helios then reveals that he is priest of Elysion, a sacred place deep within the Earth that protects it. Helios is also Mamoru's guardian priest and they are both connected to each other and to the Earth itself and Elysion within it. The cause of Mamoru's illness is revealed to be a black rose in both his and Helios's chests, a sign of the curse Nehelenia, ruler of the Dead Moon, has placed over Elysion. When the Silver Millennium was destroyed, the seal on Nehelenia faltered, and she tageted Elysion and cursed it. The solar eclipse enabled her to come to Earth. Helios says Sailor Moon must save Elysion with the Silver and Golden Crystals, and disappears. Mamoru wants to avoid Sailor Moon for fear of infecting her but she tells him they will get through this together.

Minako is unable to transform. CereCere notices this, and VesVes summons two knife-throwing twins, Xenotime and Zeolite, to target her. Minako, Ami, Rei, and Makoto are patrolling Azabu-Juban and notice its getting hot and civilians are getting aggressive toward eachother. Minako thinks she's a failure as a leader of the Inner Sailor Guardians and lashes out at the other three when they keep mentioning the Outers who are absent. A disguised Xenotime invites her to a Pop Idol Audition at the Dead Moon Circus, and she enters despite knowing it's a trap and being unable to transform. She wants to prove herself. At the audition, Xenotime announces to a crowd of prospective idols that they must race to save four kids he set at the top of a tower, and the winner gets five million yen and stardom. Lemures attack the other idols, and despite Sailor Jupiter, Sailor Mars, and Sailor Mercury arriving to help Minako, she runs ahead to handle the situation on her own. Zeolite pins Sailor Mercury, Sailor Mars, and Sailor Jupiter with knives and sets some Lemures on them threatening Minako's life if they interfere.

Minako reaches the kids, but they turn out to be Lemures in disguise. Minako is pinned by Xenotime with knives and VesVes then has the Lemures brainwash Minako, but Artemis quickly snaps her out of it. VesVes sends her falling down a trapdoor in the tower. Artemis tries to save her, but PallaPalla sends a boulder falling on top of him. Artemis then turns to his human form for the first time and lifts the boulder off himself while keeping Minako from falling to her doom. When he gives her the Venus Crystal he tells her that it was his doubts about her had been holding her bad and she regains the ability to transform into Super Sailor Venus. She quickly destroys Xenotime and Zeolite with Venus Love and Beauty Shock from her new Whip of Love. Soon after the Super Sailor Senshi reunite, PallaPalla then traps them in vines before confronting them alongside VesVes, CereCere, and JunJun.

As Usagi falls ill from a Black Rose inside her at her home as Chibiusa watches, Zirconia uses the nightmare energy she has accumulated to summon a giant moon of darkness above the circus. In the post-credits scene, an adolescent, but no longer a baby, Hotaru recites a passage of the poem The Second Coming by W. B. Yeats foretelling grim times ahead.

Part II[]

Hotaru has been raised by Haruka, Michiru and Setsuna at their home as they live a peaceful life. Since the day of the eclipse, Haruka, Michiru, and Setsuna realize an enemy is on Earth, but they, like the Inner Sailor Guardians, have lost the ability to transform since the eclipse. This also accelerated Hotaru's growth and she grew from a baby to a little girl. When Hotaru plays the violin during one of Michiru's lessons, ghostly apparitions of Helios and Chibiusa appear which ends with Chibiusa crying over Helios's dead body. Hotaru simulates the solar system they see darkness engulf the Earth. The adults know something is wrong and suspect their peaceful life is ending but try to ignore it. Sailor Saturn appears in a mirror and talks to Hotaru saying she is a part of her sleeping within her and restores her memories of her past life. The awakened Hotaru walks in on the others and tells them its time for them to return and protect the ones they care for. She gives Haruka, Michiru, and Setsuna their Sailor Crystals (Uranus Crystal, Neptune Crystal, and Pluto Crystal) restoring their ability to transform as they leave to help the others.

Haruka, Michiru, Setsuna, and Hotaru arrive at the fight between the Inner Sailor Guardians and Amazoness Quartet and transform into Super Sailor Uranus, Super Sailor Neptune, Super Sailor Pluto, and Super Sailor Saturn. Sailor Uranus and Sailor Pluto release the Inner Senshi from the vines. Artemis turns back into a cat. As the Outer Guardians fight the Amazoness Quartet, Chibiusa and Usagi sense the Outer Guardians have returned. Chibiusa rushes to their side after using Submarine Mirror to return the Deep Aqua Mirror to Michiru and follows it to the Circus. Usagi and Mamoru also go out to try to help despite their illness. Sailor Neptune destroys the circus tent with Submarine Reflection revealing the Dead Moon floating above which is a dark portal that nightmares are coming from. Civilians are being corrupted by the nightmare energy and fighting amongst themselves before passing out. After Sailor Chibi Moon, Sailor Moon, and Tuxedo Mask arrive, so does Zirconia, who taunts the Senshi and mortally wounds Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask, causing them to de-transform and turn younger. Zirconia and the Amazoness Quartet leave. Saturn and Chibi Moon follow the Quartet as Helios astral-projects and teleports Usagi and Mamoru away to save their lives leaving the others behind.

Sailor Chibi Moon and Sailor Saturn reunite and speak before the follow the Amazoness Quartet inside a tent. CereCere says she'll send them to hell, to which Sailor Saturn says it's the Amazoness Quartet that are already in hell, revealing that they are corrupted by Nehelenia's dark nightmare power. They are initially skeptical, but just as Sailor Saturn starts to get through to them, Zirconia traps them inside orbs, and then traps Sailor Chibi Moon and Sailor Saturn inside shards of glass. She then puts the six of them inside Nehelenia's mirror.

Usagi and Mamoru wake up in Elysion, restored to their true ages through what little purification power Elysion has left. Elysion has been turned into a land of nightmares by Nehelenia. Helios, astral projecting in human form, leads Usagi and Mamoru to a shrine where the only two other inhabitants of Elysion, two priestesses called the Maenads, are encased in purifying crystal to protect them from the curse. Long ago, Mamoru's family protected Elysion, where the Golden Kingdom used to exist. Mamoru regains his memory of this. While the Silver Crystal was the power crystal of Silver Millennium, the Golden Crystal was the power crystal of Elysion, of which Mamoru, as Endymion, was prince. Together Princess Serenity and Prince Endymion shared the duty of protecting the Earth and fell in love. Long ago, Helios received a vision from "Princess Lady Serenity" who told him to seek the maiden protected by the moon who has the power to release the Golden Crystal. He has no idea where it is but thinks Usagi is the key to finding the Golden Crystal. Usagi realizes it is inside Mamoru like the Silver Crystal was inside her telling him he isn't just holding her back but has always used its power to help her. Helios leads them to his caged body and then Nehelenia notices them and confronts them from inside her mirror. Helios sends Usagi and Mamoru back to the surface.

Upon their return to the other Sailor Guardians, Usagi and Mamoru transform again. Zirconia re-appears after speaking to her Queen and conjures a hot, suffocating dark fog around the Sailor Guardians and Tuxedo Mask. They all start passing out and succumbing to it. Helios uses the last of his power to send the purifying crystals from Elysion to Earth, blocking Zirconia's fog, and apparently dying as a result. Zirconia then traps the Sailor Guardians and Tuxedo Mask in a nightmare. Tuxedo Mask breaks free on his own and snaps the Sailor Guardians out of it. All the Sailor Guardians except Sailor Moon (and Sailor Chibi Moon and Sailor Saturn, who are still imprisoned) combine their power to use Sailor Planet Power Meditation to injure Zirconia who retreats into a circus tent. Sailor Moon follows Zirconia into Nehelenia's mirror, which then blocks Sailor Venus and the others from following.

Inside the mirror, Nehelenia traps Sailor Moon inside a dome conjured from the two shards of glass. Sailor Moon destroys it with Moon Gorgeous Meditation, releasing Sailor Chibi Moon and Sailor Saturn. Sailor Moon and Sailor Chibi Moon try to use Moon Gorgeous Meditation on Nehelenia, but it turns out to be an illusion behind a glass screen. Sailor Mercury and Sailor Jupiter break the mirror with Mercury Aqua Rhapsody and Jupiter Oak Evolution. Breaking the mirror kills Nehelenia inside and makes the world in there unstable. Zirconia remains inside the mirror, saying this isn't over and Nehelenia cannot die and will rule the universe for eternity. Sailor Moon, Sailor Chibi Moon, and Sailor Saturn leave the mirror and Sailor Saturn takes the orbs containing the Amazoness Quartet with her.

The Dead Moon Circus seemingly disappears, but the darkness remains. All the Sailor Guardians and Tuxedo Mask teleport to Elysion, realizing Nehelenia is there. They meet the Maenads, now free of the purifying crystal, who take them to Helios's cage. Chibiusa is convinced he's still alive because his bell still exists and Tuxedo Mask, who is connected to Helios, is still alive. Nehelenia's broken mirror appears, able to teleport between the Dead Moon Circus and Elysion, and Zircon flies into it before Nehelenia appears inside the mirror. Nehelenia reveals she knew Queen Serenity before restoring the broken glass of her mirror and taunting Usagi. Sailor Moon uses Moon Gorgeous Meditation, but Nehelenia reflects it, trapping all the Sailor Guardians and Tuxedo Mask into a kalideoscope like dimension and there they see flashback of Sailor Moon's past life.

In this flashback, Princess Serenity has just been born and they are at the Moon Palace. Queen Serenity holds a celebration commemorating the child and there the young Inner Sailor Guardians arrive and meet the princess and pledge themselves to her. Nehelenia's mirror of the present is in Queen Serenity's room and the Nehelenia emerges from it. She was not invited and was recognized for her evil by the young Sailor Mars, emerged from her mirror and cast darkness in the Silver Millennium. The Sailor Guardians remember that the Dead Moon was once a bright white moon until Nehelenia took it over, attracted by its light. Once confirming Nehelenia's evil intentions, Queen Serenity imprisoned Nehelenia inside her mirror, but Nehelenia cursed Silver Millennium to fall and the Princess to not ascend to power, implying her curse is the reason Queen Metalia overthrew the Silver Millennium. Nehelenia set her sights on Earth following Silver Millennium's destruction and unexpected disappearance (the later by Sailor Saturn's hand).

Nehelenia takes the Silver Crystal from Sailor Moon, de-transforming her, and is ready to kill the Sailor Guardians and rule the universe. Usagi and Tuxedo Mask kiss, breaking free of Nehelenia's nightmare and teleporting the Silver Crystal back to Usagi, transforming again and holding the new Holy Moon Chalice above her. Sailor Moon transforms the other Sailor Guardians into Princess forms and summons Luna, Artemis, and Diana from the command center into their human forms. The Sailor Power Guardians (Guardian Mercury, Guardian Venus, Guardian Mars, Guardian Jupiter, Guardian Saturn, Guardian Uranus,Guardian Neptune, and Guardian Pluto) appear and tell them they are Princesses of their planets and they need to call upon their Castles to send power to Sailor Moon. Following the Sailor Power Guardians' instructions, the Sailor Guardians send their power to Sailor Moon's Holy Moon Chalice, transforming her into Eternal Sailor Moon and her Silver Crystal transforms. The other Sailor Guardians call upon their Sailor Crystals to send power to Sailor Moon's Eternal Tiare and take their Eternal forms. Tuxedo Mask, using the newly released Golden Crystal, sends more power as well. Usagi uses this power in a new attack: Starlight Honeymoon Therapy Kiss. This defeats Nehelenia and makes her appear in a form identical to Zirconia before she disappears back inside her mirror, which then turns to sand.

With Nehelenia destroyed, the cage around Helios disappears, as does the Dead Moon, revealing the sun. Earth and Elysion are restored to normal. Helios is returned to human form, and Sailor Chibi Moon revives him with a kiss and the power of her Pink Moon Crystal, which appears from her for the first time. Helios realizes the maiden he saw in his vision was not Sailor Moon, but Sailor Chibi Moon. He puts the Golden Crystal on a staff and gives it to Tuxedo Mask, who turns into King Endymion while Sailor Moon turns into Neo-Queen Serenity. Serenity and Endymion send the sand that used to be Nehelenia's mirror into the sun, destroying what remains of the Dead Moon. The cats, Senshi, Helios, and the Maenads watch the coronation of their King and Queen.

Sailor Saturn then has Serenity release the Amazoness Quartet from the orbs in which Zirconia had imprisoned them, revealing them to be the Sailor Quartet - Sailor Guardians of the first four asteroids discovered in the Solar System. CereCere is Sailor Ceres, PallaPalla is Sailor Pallas, JunJun is Sailor Juno, and VesVes is Sailor Vesta. They were asleep in the Amazon Jungle as they were supposed to be, but Nehelenia used a curse to force them to awaken into a nightmare and serve her. They go back to their sleep, saying their true awakening will take place when Sailor Chibi Moon becomes a full fledged Sailor Guardian and they will be her protectors like the Inner Sailor Guardians are Usagi's. Helios summons a pegasus and escorts everyone but the Maenads back to the surface.

He then returns to Elysion, assuring Chibiusa that they will meet again. Though the Black Rose is gone from him and Usagi, Mamoru feels something hot in his heart. He suspects it's the power of the Golden Crystal, but Usagi says it is a star shining within him, and what he's feeling is wanting to make their dreams come true and protect those they care about.

Changes from the Manga[]

  • Many scenes involving the Dead Moon Circus members talking amongst themselves in the manga are either cut or shorter in this movie. As a result, there is less information given about the strategies, backgrounds, and motivations of the Amazoness Quartet, Xenotime, Zeolite, Zirconia, and Queen Nehelenia.
  • The Moon Kaleido Scope, Chibi Moon Kaleido Scope, and Mercury Harp do not speak in this movie.
  • When Usagi and Chibiusa switch ages, Rei, Makoto, and Minako arrive to the hospital, separate from Ami, and mistakenly think the teen Chibiusa was her former evil identity as Black Lady.
  • Ikuko Tsukino appears and is brainwashed by Luna-P again.
  • Visions of the Shitennou make an appearance in this arc.
  • Sailor Mars' fight with Tiger's Eye played out differently. When she used Akuryo Taisan, it was able to harm Tiger's Eye, turning him back into a tiger. In his tiger form, he was going to kill her, and when she received her Mars Arrow, she shot it right through the tiger's mouth, killing it.
    • Tiger's Eye made no mention of his dream to be an artist.
    • Hawk's Eye mourns the death of Tiger's Eye.
  • While Rei was under attack by Tiger's Eye, Mamoru and the Senshi were trapped in the circus tent, and were freed when Sailor Mars defeated Tiger's Eye, and opened the exit.
  • Sailor Jupiter's fight against Hawk's Eye ended differently. After she received the Leaves of Oak, the attack struck Hawk's Eye while he was in his hawk form, destroying him instantly. As such, Hawk's Eye did not mention his dream to run a shop, accept defeat, nor encourage Makoto to realize her dreams in his final moments.
  • Minako brags about her invitation to an Idol Audition from Xenotime to the other Inner Sailor Guardians.
  • In the manga, Minako used her Compact when she is on the way to the Idol Audition.
  • The interlude with the Outer Sailor Guardians occurs earlier while Artemis is attacked by a boulder in the manga rather than when Inner Sailor Guardians are attacked by vines.
  • Chibiusa is shorter in this movie than she is in the Dream arc of the manga.

Changes from the 90's Anime[]

  • Dream Mirrors do not exist in this movie and the Dead Moon Circus' plans and origins do not connect to them and are very different.
  • Lemures were not small numerous balls of darkness, but grown monsters with unique appearances, that acted as the episode's Monster-of-the-Week.
  • The Amazon Trio were created by Zirconia and were leaders of many Monsters-of-the-Week themselves.
  • The Amazon Trio reform, but Hawk's Eye is killed by a Lemures while protecting Fish Eye, and Tiger's Eye and Fish Eye sacrifices themselves to restore Usagi's Dream Mirror so she can defeat the Lemures. The Trio are then revived by Pegasus and sent to Elysion with Dream Mirrors of their own. Also, Fish Eye has the most fleshed out redemption act where in Eternal he's the least sympathetic and never shows a less evil side as Hawk's Eye does.
  • The Maenads, Xenotime and Zeolite did not appear.
  • The Amazoness Quartet didn't appear until about halfway through the arc in the 90's anime, while in the movie they're established as threats from the beginning.
  • In the 90's anime, the Amazoness Quartet are humans never revealed to be Sailor Guardians.
  • The Dead Moon Circus were searching for Pegasus to get the Golden Crystal, rather than the Silver Crystal.
  • Mamoru and VesVes were not present when PallaPalla used Opposite Orb on Sailor Moon and Sailor Chibi Moon.
  • After Usagi and Chibiusa switched ages, they still remained in their Sailor forms.
  • Mamoru was never taken to the hospital owned by Ami's mother. Instead, it was Hotaru during the S season.
  • Adult Chibiusa from beyond the 30th century, Princess Lady Serenity, does not make an appearance and her words are not Helios' primary motivator. Chibiusa's princess dress looks like Usagi's.
  • Having already the Golden Crystal, Helios spends the SuperS season searching for the one who could unleash its full power.
  • Helios leaves his body behind and escapes the Dead Moon Circus in the 90's anime, while he only takes brief absences in this movie.
  • Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune didn't appear in the SuperS season, aside from in a single television special. Sailor Saturn and Sailor Pluto did not appear at all.
  • Queen Nehelenia's backstory is very different in the 90's anime and though Queen Serenity is mentioned she does not make an appearance in it.
  • The Golden Crystal never had the shape of a flower and was Helios' horn, rather than being inside Mamoru.
  • Sailor Chibi Moon was the one who was revived by the second kiss between her and Helios.
  • In SuperS, Nehelenia leaves her mirror, causing Zirconia to disappear onscreen. She also survives her defeat, but is reduced to a much older form and returns to her mirror to regain her eternal youth, later returning in Sailor Stars where she later reforms.
  • The Inner Sailor Guardians, Outer Sailor Guardians, and Sailor Chibi Moon used Sailor Teleport without Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask to go to Nehellenia's Castle.
  • Artemis, Diana, Phobos and Deimos never appeared in human forms in SuperS, while Luna's briefly appeared in the Sailor Moon S movie. Phobos' and Deimos' role was very minor in the 90's anime and they neither spoke.
  • Sailor Power Guardians do not exist in the 90's anime.
  • The Sailor Crystals are not introduced until Sailor Stars season, where they are quite different.
  • Only Sailor Moon reaches her Eternal form while the Inner Sailor Guardians, Outer Sailor Guardians, and Sailor Chibi Moon remain in their Super forms in the 90's anime.
  • The Inner and Outer Sailor Guardians are not Sailor Princesses and do not have castles in the 90's anime.
  • Usagi and Mamoru do not take forms resembling their future Crystal Tokyo selves in the present in the 90's anime.

Trivia[]

  • This is Sailor Saturn's first film appearance as she was the only main Sailor Guardian left out of the films of the 90's anime.
  • Luna's eyes are blue, like in the manga, instead of red like in earlier seasons of Crystal.
  • The Japanese Theatrical and Blu-ray releases of Part II end with a "To be continued..." teaser hinting the team was working on Sailor Moon Cosmos.[5] This is not present in the Netflix streaming release and the reason behind its removal is unknown.
  • Only Usagi's final form had an official name before this movie: Eternal Sailor Moon. Fans had named the others' their "Eternal Forms" before this movie made the fan term official.
  • The manga artbooks had conflicting information so fans did not know which of Phobos and Deimos was the red one and which was the purple one. In the movie, the one in red introduces herself as Phobos and the purple one as Deimos resolving this longstanding mystery.
