The Rainbow Crystals (虹水晶, Nijisuishou) are the seven fragments of the Silver Crystal in which the Seven Great Monsters are sealed. Originally controlled by Queen Serenity of the Moon Kingdom as devices capable of containing the Dark Kingdom's greatest warriors, they are eventually hidden within the bodies of the reincarnated Great Monsters, now civilians with no memory of their pasts. Gradually, Zoisite and Kunzite manage to retrieve all of the Rainbow Crystals and reawaken the Great Monsters, only for Sailor Moon to purify the latter group and obtain the reformed Silver Crystal after its fragments combine with her tear. The Rainbow Crystals appear solely in the first season of the '90s anime.
History[]
Queen Serenity imprisons the Seven Great Monsters within seven separate shards of the Silver Crystal, which become known as the Rainbow Crystals (because each one is a different color of the traditional seven-color spectrum). The Crystals are sent to Earth along with Princess Serenity and her court, where the Seven Great Monsters are reincarnated inside of normal human beings (and in one case, a cat). The carriers have no knowledge of the Rainbow Crystals inside of them, although in some this manifests as special abilities, such as telekinesis or other psychic powers. While the monsters are sealed within the Rainbow Crystals, they are unable to exert their evil influence. Once the crystals are removed from the carriers, however, they revert back to their monster forms.
The Rainbow Crystals are first introduced in episode 25. Queen Beryl instructs Zoisite to locate the seven crystals in order to re-form the Silver Crystal and fully revive Queen Metalia. To accomplish this task, Zoisite is given the Black Crystal, which can detect and then later remove the Rainbow Crystals from their carriers.[1] During the next seven episodes, a massive search ensues. Zoisite is able to locate each of the Rainbow Crystals and extract them, causing carriers to revert to their Great Monster form. The Sailor Guardians attempt to stop Zoisite but are usually attacked by the monster. Rather than killing the monster, Sailor Moon uses Moon Healing Escalation to seal the monster within their carriers once again.
In Episode 34, the Dark Kingdom manages to collect all seven of the Rainbow Crystals. When Tuxedo Mask is injured while attempting to recover them, Sailor Moon cries, and the crystals magically align with her. The seven crystals then combine with her tear, and the Silver Crystal is formed.[2]
