Sailor Moon Wiki Index wording

Please do not upload images to the wiki without an explicit purpose. If an image is to be uploaded, it must be for a reason and linked to from a page or it will be deleted.

About Images

Images on this wiki are used for illustration purposes to depict what is often hard to describe in words. Text is the main focus of a wiki like this one and images supplement that purpose. Any other uses of images, on Wikia or elsewhere, might be copyright infringement. The Sailor Moon series and characters are property of their creators. All related titles, logos, images and characters are trademark and copyright of their respective owners.

Images here on the English-language Sailor Moon Wiki are hosted on servers in the United States by Fandom.

General Don'ts

There are a handful of images that are eligible for instant deletion upon an admin seeing them. If an image contains any of these traits, please do not upload it:

  • Fanart/ Fan-fiction/ Fan edits/Fan translations
  • Cosplay/ Selfies
  • Smut/ Hentai/ Ecchi
  • Images or content unrelated to Sailor Moon
  • Duplicates (see "Replacing Images" below)
  • Accounts labelled as "Inactive" or contributions are largely made on their own user page.
  • Images with watermarks, unofficial or non-Sailor Moon related logos (i.e CrunchyRoll, YouTube, etc.)
  • Images with subtitles (exceptions may apply).
  • Images with interfaces visible (smartphone buttons, streaming/scrubber bars, annotations, etc.)
  • Images with poor file names
  • Unused Images

You may display only one unique image on your user page. The "1 image per user" also applies to user blog posts and threads. This means that if the one image you choose to upload is uploaded to a blog post, you cannot upload another one to your user page or a thread. If you want to share an image, please upload it to an image sharing site and link it in the post.

File Types

Images come in many formats with different extensions (eg: .png, .jpg, .gif, .webp). Generally, the only place the file type matters is in page infoboxes. jpeg images do not support transparencies so try to avoid using them for infoboxes where transparencies are often desired.

Replacing Images

Uploading images which are already on the wiki is strongly discouraged. If the current image is of poor quality you can upload a new version of that image by going to its page and uploading a new version of it effectively overwriting it. This cannot change the file extension (eg .jpg to .png) so if that needs to be done, please mark the old version with the deletion template: {{delete|Replaced with File:NameofNewImage.png}}.

Before uploading an image, check to make sure a similar image is not already uploaded and linked to on a similar page. Ideally, a single image can be used to illustrate a point in multiple places.

File Names

The name of a file is integral to editors. It is much easier to find the DVD cover if it is titled something like: Sailor Moon SuperS DVD Vol.1 - Cover.png". Instead of "tumblr 5465d4g65d4fg46sxdg.jpeg". When files are named in a sequential manner, it makes editing lists and just about any page, much easier.

A well chosen file name, in combination with its caption, should make the file appear if the subject of the image is searched for.

How to Name a File

When naming files, it's important to note that there are common names people tend to name an image i.e "Sailor Moon.png". Please do not replace the already existing image if the warning occurs; instead, rename the one you want to upload to something different. This does not mean "add numbers or random letters" to the file name. Try to make the file name more distinct as it will make it unique and more useful. Differentiating which Sailor Moon series the image pertains to with the file name is a good idea.

Examples

Sailor Moon.png already exists, another names for the file being attempted to upload could be:

  • Sailor Moon - Pose.png
  • Sailor Moon - Crystal Version.png
  • PGSM - Sailor Moon.png

But if the image is part of a "set" (normally accompanied by similar images of the other senshi.) Please name the other files with the same manner.

Acronyms

Acronyms are generally reserved for merchandise such as OSTs, DVDs and books. The only time acronyms are okay to use is when naming screen shots. These are the following accepted acronyms:

  • CSM = "Classic Sailor Moon" in reference to the first season of the original 90's anime.
  • SMR = "Sailor Moon R" in reference to the second season of the original 90's anime.
  • SMS = "Sailor Moon S" in reference to the third season of the original 90's anime.
  • SMSS = "Sailor Moon SuperS" in reference to the fourth season of the 90's anime.
  • SMSs = "Sailor Moon Stars" in reference to the fifth season of the 90's anime.
  • SMC = "Sailor Moon Crystal" in reference to the remake of the series.
  • SME = "Sailor Moon Eternal" in reference to the 4th season of Crystal.
  • PGSM = "Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon" in reference to the live-action TV series.
  • SMM = "Sera Myu Musical" in reference to the stage-plays.

Please do not shorten the senshi's names in any way as there are various senshi's planet that starts with M.

When naming a screen shot file, it is very simple; use the acronym from above, then add "EP" and the number of the episode as well as a "-" and a short description of what's in the image. For example:

  • CSM EP01 - Usagi.png
  • SMSS EP05 - Sailor Mars running.jpeg
  • SMC EP16 - Ami smiling.png

What About GIFs and Videos?

We'd prefer if animated GIFs were not uploaded to the wiki. The only exception is for attacks and henshin/transformation scenes.

Videos (YouTube, DailyMotion, etc.) are almost completely prohibited. Videos are often taken down from YouTube and become unavailable on the wiki with no warning or notification that this has happened. This creates a large number of broken video links on the wiki and a demand on time to monitor which videos are no longer available and need to be removed or replaced. Some videos, even if they seem to work, may also not be available to certain users in certain countries and regions.

Before you upload

  • Please spare some thought about official images before you upload them, consider a few things;
• You are allowed to upload images released for;
• Official artwork - Official artwork found in artbooks and such.
• Promotional artwork - Concept art and full body art or otherwise. These are releases into the public sector to create interest or familiarity with the product. Therefore, these are fine.
• Merchandise - again only 1 image. For manga related pages, only upload volume covers and never whole pages. If any artwork directly from a manga is used, only 1 frame is allowed per page and no more.
• Anime, PGSM, and Gameplay screenshots are fine.
• Illustrators often produce work for non-promotional purposes as well as promotional. Sometimes we must draw the line because of this on if the image is useful to the wikia or not.
• If a studio or company objects to a image being on the wikia, the wikia will remove it and cannot add it back. We will attempt to explain why it exists on here to the studio, however, the wikia is not here to upset any of the studios and companies as we support them.
•Note that the grounds for "Fair Use" does not give us the right to upload every image without consequence and this should never be used as an excuse for a particular image to exist on the wikia for the sake of it existing here.
• Most important of all is that editors should be aware that not every piece of promotional artwork is required to be on the wikia. If the artwork is not already on the wikia, it may because another editor felt it was not needed or alternatively it was forgotten. However, editors may choose not to upload a image because it does nothing for the wikia itself. More importantly, the more images we upload the more we have to explain why a image exists on the wikia. If you don't have any use for an image at all then it will probably get deleted.
  • Please do not upload episode shots with subtitles or manga pages that have been fan translated.

1 Image per User

As mentioned above, if you do decide to decorate your page with images and one so happens to be your "1 Image", please name it: Username 1 Image.filetype. Examples:

  • DuchessDream 1 Image.png
  • SailorMoonFan 1 Image.jpg

This will notify that the image is not spam and has been chosen to be the place holder for your one image.

If you want to change your one image, simply go to the file's page and select "replace" from the "Edit" drop down menu. Keep in mind: you can only replace images of the same file type; PNG>PNG, jpeg>jpeg. This means you cannot replace a JPG with a PNG. This is not a rule, but rather just the way the wiki works.

Why so Strict?

The rules at first may seem strict. But once you have been editing long enough, you will begin to understand why having rules for uploading and naming images creates an easier work environment. While the site is indeed "created by fans and for fans" we'd like to keep it informational. There are other sites for sharing fan works and are unaffected by file names.
