Anime[]
The Sailor Moon anime first began to air in France in the year 1993 in the month of December, and it was the first foreign country to air the anime. Like the North American distributors, the French AB Studio did not get the rights to the Stars season, and therefore ended at the SuperS season. R Movie was also dubbed by French AB. The only season ever released on DVD was Sailor Moon SuperS, but the license expired and remained incomplete. The release was also out of order.
In 2013, Kazé France released the first season of the anime on DVD. The DVD was released in all French-speaking European countries. On January 21, 2014, Toei Animation Europe announced that Kazé France has licensed Sailor Moon R and Sailor Moon S for DVD release in all French-speaking European countries.[1] Kazé France did season 5, S and SuperS Movie and the first 2 seasons of Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Crystal all released in DVDs.
On February 22nd 2024, the French pay-tv channel Mangas, which had previously aired the anime in the late 90s', announced via its twitter account, that the first season of the anime would be rebroadcast starting April 2024, in a remastered version completely uncensored by Mediawan Thematics (previously known as AB Productions).
Censorship and Changes[]
- Zoisite and Kunzite were changed to become brothers, meaning Zoisite stayed a man.
- Haruka and Michiru's relationship was explained by saying that Haruka pretended to be a man in civilian form, and Michiru pretended to be "his" girlfriend.
- Fish Eye was changed to be female.
- Zirconia was changed to be male.
- In some episodes, Artemis was changed to be female but later, characters referred to him as "he." Luna remained female.
- All insert songs were kept during the first season, but almost all songs were deleted from the R season onwards.
- On several occasions during the S season, Rei's nightmare about the Silence was entirely removed. Only small pieces of the nightmare were kept.
