" On behalf of Jupiter, I call upon the forces of thunder and lightning to vanquish this evil! "

Template:InfoboxCharacterSailor Jupiter (♃) is one of the five original Inner Sailor Senshi of the Solar System. Her civilian identity is Makoto Kino (Lita Kino in the English Dub). Sailor Jupiter is the third member of the Senshi to be discovered by Usagi Tsukino, the fifth and last of the Senshi to be discovered by the Moon Cats, and serves as the "muscle" of the group. She is also the tallest among the Inner Senshi. Her powers are associated with lightning, wood, nature, and plants. Wood, in Japanese astrology, represents strength and flexibility.

Throughout the various incarnations of the series, Sailor Jupiter was given various titles and/or referred to herself with various titles. They include: "Soldier of Thunder and Courage" and the "Soldier of Protection" under guardianship of the "Planet of Thunder."

Appearance

Sailor Jupiter

As Sailor Jupiter, she wore the standard Senshi fuku and dominant color of the fuku was green while the accent color was (sugar) pink. Her collar, center of her front bow, skirt, the gem on her tiara, the elbow fittings on her gloves, choker, and her boots were green with white laces, and her front bow, back bow, and earrings were (sugar) pink. She had pink rose earrings and a hair tie with two light green balls that were carried over from her civilian state. Her collar had two white stripes, and her shoes were ankle-high, lace-up boots.

The anime version was very similar to the manga version, except in the manga, her collar had three stripes.

The live-action version was almost completely identical to the manga version, except in the live-action series, the Rose Belt was always around her waist, when in the manga it occasionally appears.

In the musicals, Sailor Jupiter's fuku was significantly different. Her elbow fittings on her gloves, sleeves and bows were pink. Her skirt, collar and choker were green. The center of her front bow was shaped like a diamond and golden with green gems. She also had golden diamond in the center of her choker, and unlike the other incarnations of the series, she had golden diamond earrings instead of her pink rose earrings. In a later verision of her fuku, her sleeves were changed from pink to green, and her earrings, the center of her front bow, and choker ornament became golden flowers. The trim on her fuku was gold.

In all version of Sailor Moon (unsure about the musicals), Sailor Jupiter had an antenna that emerged from her tiara that she used to perform many attacks, and in the rerelease manga, it was always out. Also in the rerelease manga and the live-action series, she had a belt (called the Rose Belt) attaching a ball of potpourri to her waist.

In the manga and anime, Makoto used her Transformation Pen in order to transform into Sailor Jupiter, while in the live-action series, she used her Jewelry Star Bracelet. It is unsure what item she uses to transform with in the musicals.

Super Sailor Jupiter

In the manga, when Sailor Moon became Super Sailor Moon for the first time, the center of Sailor Jupiter's front bow became a heart, but she did not recieve the "Super" upgrade at the time.

When she recieved the "Super" upgrade, her choker had a five-pointed golden star on it, the bottom of her sleeves became transparent, the center of her front bow became a heart, and her back bow was enlarged and lengthened.

The anime version was almost completely identical to the manga version, except in the manga, the golden star on her choker had a green gem in the center of it.

In the musicals, her fuku was essentialy faithful to her "Super" fuku in the manga and anime. The colors of her fuku, at first, were the same as the colors from her previous fuku, except her skirt now had two layers. The top layer was green, while the bottom layer was pink. In later versions of her fuku, the elbow fittings on her gloves changed from pink to green, her choker ornament became a golden star with a green circle and the symbol of Jupiter in the center of it. The center of her front bow was heart-shaped with a green gem ringed in gold, and her earrings were round and gold with a green gem in the center.

In the manga, Makoto used the Jupiter Crystal she recieves from her Sailor Power Guardian, Guardian Jupiter, to transform into Super Sailor Jupiter. In the anime, she uses her Crystal Change Rod. It is unknown what item she uses to transforms with in the musicals.

Eternal Sailor Jupiter

In the last arc of the manga, Makoto recieved her "Eternal" upgrade, along with the other Solar System Senshi. Her fuku appeared to be similar to Eternal Sailor Moon's fuku, except she did not have a pair of wings. Her round, green tiara gem changed to a five-pointed green star, and her choker became more V-shaped, but it still had the five-pointed golden star without the green gem in the center of it. Her collar had one stripe, and her sleeves became puffier and light green with things resembling her elbow fittings. Her elbow fittings had three rings instead of two, and her gloves extended past her elbows. The center of her front bow was a five-pointed green star, and she had a belt with two ribbons, a light green and a dark green, held together by a golden star. Her skirt had two layers, the top layer dark green and the bottom layer light green. Her back bow changed from (sugar) pink to a light green, and the stray pieces of the ribbon were thinner and longer. She no longer wore her green ankle boots, but instead wore white boots, which were V-shaped at the top, with a green border at the top with a golden star. Her earrings became five-pointed dangling green stars.

This Senshi form was only shown in the manga.

Princess Jupiter

During the Silver Millenium, Sailor Jupiter was the princess/ruler of her planet, Jupiter, and she was given the duty protecting Princess Serenity along with Sailors/Princesses Mercury, Mars, and Venus. She wore a green strap dress that came to her feet with two roses at the hips. The dress had a split that started around her waist. She has a green choker that ties into a ribbon at the back, and she wears a necklace. She wore green high-heeled shoes that each had a strap with a small green rose on it. She wore a green ribbon with a red rose in the center, and rose earrings. The symbol of Jupiter was present on her forehead. She dwelt in Io Castle.

This form was shown in the manga, but not the anime.

Evil Sailor Jupiter

After being killed by Sailor Galaxia in Act 49 of the Stars manga, Sailor Jupiter is revived. Once revived she wears her Super Sailor outfit with braclets similar to the ones Galaxia wears. The bracelets are gold with with two gems one on each braclet, one purple and one green. This form only appeared in the manga.

Sailor Jupiter concept art in English

Like the other Senshi's earlier costumes, Jupiter's was fully unique. It featured buckles, long gloves, blue and yellow highlights, a bare lower torso, a profusion of thin, dark pink ribbons, a face-plate and communicator. In other artworks, the outfit looked the same as the final product outfit but with a couple of differences, such as the addition of a belt (which was later added in when the manga was re-released) and the fact that she only wore one glove.

Naoko Takeuchi later told the animators of the anime to make Makoto appear muscular and "a little meatier than normal".

Reception and influence

Like the other choices, the official Sailor Moon character popularity polls listed Makoto Kino and Sailor Jupiter as separate forms. In the year 1992, readers ranked Makoto at eleventh, while Sailor Jupiter was ranked at fifth respectively, out of thirty eight choices. In 1993, now with fifty choices, Jupiter was later dropped to the eleventh most popular while Makoto was twelfth most popular. In 1994, with one more choice, Sailor Jupiter was now the seventeenth most popular character and Makoto was eighteenth. In the early 1996 poll, Makoto was the twenty third most popular character and Jupiter was the twenty seventh.

Trivia

  • The planet Jupiter is known for its horrific storms. The Big Red Spot is actually an anticyclonic storm.
    • This may be the reason for Sailor Jupiter's lightning powers.
    • In addition, Jupiter, the king of the Roman gods, was known for throwing lightning bolts.
  • Although generally the most aggressive of the inner Senshi, she actually exhibits many femine qualities, specifically through her love of (and talent for) domestic activities.
  • Sailor Jupiter's Ayakashi Sister counterpartner was Petz. Her Witches 5 counterpartner was Tellu. Her Sailor Quartet counterpartner was JunJun/Sailor Juno.
