Sailor Cosmos is a central figure in the final arc of Sailor Moon. She is a Sailor Guardian from the distant future who initially disguises herself as a small girl: Chibi Chibi. She reveals her true form in the last two acts of the manga.

Etymology[]

Cosmos is a synonym of universe in many European languages. In Greek creation myths, the Cosmos refers to everything which arose from the primordial void state: Chaos.

Lambda Power is a reference to the Cosmological Constant used in Cosmology. Albert Einstein originally added this term to his General Theory of Relativity because he wanted his theory to have a way to oppose the attractive force of gravity to create a static, eternal, universe.

Appearance[]

Sailor Cosmos has long white hair tied in a pair of heart-shaped odango. Her bangs have an exaggerated heart-shape. Her dress resembles a sailor uniform and it has a white collar with three yellow stripes, short yellow sleeves with wings, and multicolored ribbons in the middle of the skirt. She wears two brooches, one below the point of her collar and another between her hips. Both brooches are comprised of an eight-pointed yellow star with wings attached to the sides by white beads. Her skirt brooch sits above multicolored ribbons representing the Sailor Senshi: black for Pluto, purple for Saturn, pink for Chibi Moon, red for Mars, yellow for Venus, green for Jupiter, navy for Uranus, teal for Neptune, blue for Mercury, and two long white for Cosmos/Moon. Her eye colour is either blue or silver depending on the artwork.[2]

She wears high-heeled white shoes with wings at the heel, white rings on each finger (except for her thumbs), white earrings, a tiara with white beads and a yellow star in the middle, a white choker with a yellow star in the middle, winged white bead barrettes, and white hair pieces circled by yellow beads. She also dons a long white cape which she can exchange for a large pair of wings at her back. She wields a winged staff taller than she is. Her staff has one large white sphere topped with a smaller sphere with an eight-pointed star matching her brooches. Beneath the winged sphere is a smaller yellow sphere and beneath that is a smaller white sphere, a motif that is repeated at the bottom. The white beads may represent or even be pearls, one of Usagi's birthstones.

Personality[]

While in her true form, Sailor Cosmos has low self-esteem and, much like Neo-Queen Serenity, idolizes her younger self: Sailor Moon. She is embarrassed by her actions and considers herself a coward for running away from Sailor Chaos. She is humble and hopeful for the future and wishes to be able to, but doubts she can live up to Sailor Moon's example.

Information[]

In the distant future, Sailor Chaos emerges from the Galaxy Cauldron and is the source of catastrophe. Sailor Cosmos tries to stop the constant death and destruction but is unable to defeat her. Eventually, she loses all hope of stopping Sailor Chaos and reversing the damage inflicted. She would think of her distant past when she challenged Chaos at the Galaxy Cauldron and thought if she had destroyed them both back then the carnage could have been avoided. That regret eventually grew into action as she returned to the past with the goal of guiding her younger self to make that alternate decision while disguised as a young girl: Chibi Chibi.

Eventually, Sailor Chibi Chibi stands alongside Eternal Sailor Moon facing down Chaos and the Galaxy Cauldron but rather than convincing Usagi to destroy the Cauldron as intended, Usagi convinces her the action she took so long ago was the correct one. Usagi tells her not give up hope for her future and in tears, Chibi Chibi agrees and reveals her true form telling Usagi they won't lose. She watches on as Eternal Sailor Moon makes the same decision she had - Usagi gathers the power of all Sailor Crystals inside and outside of the Galaxy Cauldron and attempts to embrace Chaos and save her friends and dies in the process. This creates the Lambda Power of the Cosmos Crystal which regenerates the galaxy, including Usagi herself and her friends, and sees Chaos dissolve back into the depths of the Galaxy Cauldron.

The Sailor Quartet find Sailor Cosmos watching near the Cauldron and she tells them her story and what Eternal Sailor Moon accomplished. Sailor Ceres calls Sailor Cosmos "Sailor Moon's Ultimate Form" but Sailor Cosmos will not hear it. She does not compare herself favorably to Sailor Moon, believing she is not worthy of the title "Sailor Cosmos" or the Cosmos Crystal she wields. Instead she calls Sailor Moon the "True Sailor Cosmos" as it was she performed the courageous feat at the Galaxy Cauldron that saved the galaxy and united Sailor Crystals from all over to create the Cosmos Crystal she wields in the first place. She doubts herself but hopes she can have the courage to become worthy of the title. When she is finished speaking to the Sailor Quartet, Sailor Cosmos sends them back to the 30th Century to protect their princess, Sailor Chibi Moon.

Afterwards, she returns to her own time with renewed hope and inspiration from Eternal Sailor Moon's actions. The result of her next meeting with Sailor Chaos or the ultimate fate of the universe is left unknown.

Sailor Guardian Info[]

Sailor Cosmos is a highly unusual Sailor Guardian who hides her identity and what she is capable of providing only glimpses of her true power. She does not use incantation phases to use her wide variety of powers so few of her abilities have names. Nonetheless, she is the most powerful Sailor Guardian potentially eclipsed only by her nemesis Sailor Chaos.

Powers[]

  • Lambda Power: Sailor Cosmos possesses the "Ultimate Lambda power of the Cosmos Crystal",[3] a power she wielded even when she was  Eternal Sailor Moon who uses it to purify the Galaxy Cauldron and revive the Star Seeds taken by Shadow Galactica. She also describes this healing power abstractly as "the power to create a static universe"[3] which suggests it can act at a cosmological scale.
  • The Courage of Acceptance:[4] Granted to her by Eternal Sailor Moon, the "power of courage to throw it all away... [and] accept anyone and everything"[3] is a power Sailor Cosmos had forgotten.
  • Memory Manipulation: She manipulates the Tsukino clan's memory to make them believe Chibi Chibi was always part of the family like Chibiusa did, but is not shown doing so. She is also seemingly immune to memory altering magic.[6]
  • Time Travel: She can send herself and others through time.[7] She does this without the use of a Space-Time Key.
  • Time Manipulation: She intended to rewrite history and had succeeded until Usagi changed her mind. This is seen through her effects on the 30th Century which became unstable soon after her arrival in the present.[8] History is put back on track by the Lambda Power after Cosmos relents.
  • Long Range Powers: She can detect and use magic across incredible distances.[10]
  • Other Powers: She assists an unconscious Usagi into summoning her Holy Moon Chalice and helped her as she slept. She stopped Sailor Galaxia from destroying Earth by restoring all the damage caused and banishing her leaving Galaxia surprised to awaken in her own bed at Galactica Palace later on. Mamoru and Galaxia's final words in the manga strongly suggest she is immortal.

Trivia[]

  • In the December 1998 issue of Smile magazine, Naoko Takeuchi directly stated that Chibi Chibi is the future Sailor Moon.[11]
  • On one of the last pages of Artbook V is a message from Naoko Takeuchi to her fans. In the background, is a sketch of Eternal Sailor Moon holding Sailor Cosmos' brooch. Here it looks a little different. Instead of giant wings the brooch has small feathers protruding from the pearls analogous to the Eternal Moon Article in its untransformed state.
  • Sailor Cosmos doesn't appear at all in the 90s anime, but the silhouette of the Light of Hope has a cape like Sailor Cosmos.

  7. In Act 51, she arrives in the present by falling from the sky reminiscent of Chibiusa's arrival though she uses an umbrella to fall gracefully unlike her daughter. In Act 60, she sends the Sailor Quartet back to the future with a swipe of her staff.
  8. Act 53 Stars 4 - Sailor Pluto of the future detects energy from distant spacetime altering history.
  9. She creates a barrier to protect Eternal Sailor Chibi Moon during the battle between Sailor Galaxia and Eternal Sailor Moon, when Sailor Phi kills the Sailor Starlights, and from the attacks Galactica Super String and Galactica Glaive Surprise. Though she was hit directly by Galactica Cannon, her desire to leave the fight to Sailor Moon suggests that was intentional to remove herself from the battlefield.
  10. Act 57 Stars 8 - While under attack at Sagittarius Zero Star, she detected Sailor Chibi Moon and the Sailor Quartet on Earth, telepathically spoke to them, and teleported them to her location so they could help. This earned the awe of Princess Kakyuu and Usagi from the power required to do such a thing; though, they were unable to identify who had done it. The center of the Milky Way is approximately 26,000 light years away from Earth.
