Template:InfoboxCharacter Princess Serenity ("Princess Serena" in the DiC English dub) lived on the moon during the Silver Millennium as the daughter of Queen Serenity, who ruled the Silver Millennium and watched over the Earth. She is the preincarnation of Usagi Tsukino (Sailor Moon). Serenity's father is most likely deceased, as he is never shown or mentioned in the series. Her guardians and closest friends were Sailor Mercury, Sailor Mars, Sailor Jupiter, and Sailor Venus, who were princesses of their own respective planets, but lived on the moon with her at times.

Role

Manga

In the manga, Serenity was fascinated by the Earth. Even though she was given orders not to go to the planet, she secretly visited there and met Prince Endymion. The two then fell in love. During the Dark Kingdom's attack which caused the Moon Kingdom's downfall, Prince Endymion died protecting Serenity. She committed suicide due to Endymion's death. Serenity's mother, the Queen, sealed away the evil and the moon(as seen in Volume 3), but everyone involved was killed. Before her own death, the Queen used the Silver Crystal to give her daughter and others another chance at life, hoping in particular that, this time, Serenity and Endymion could find happiness together.

Princess Serenity in the anime

Queen Metalia killed both Serenity and Endymion, unlike the manga. Serenity's mother, the Queen, was able to seal away the evil which had inspired the attack, but everyone involved was killed. The Queen then used the Silver Crystal to give her daughter, her love, and the Sailor Senshi another life, hoping in particular that, this time, her daughter and the prince would finally find happiness.

Princess Serenity in PGSM

Princess Serenity in PGSM.

In the live-action series, it was Princess Serenity herself who destroyed the Moon Kingdom, after Endymion was killed during the war to keep the two apart. She apparently had full control of Sailor Moon's upgraded form Princess Sailor Moon, which caused Usagi to get into an internal conflict with her duing the last parts of PGSM. As Serenity selfishly refused to see the consequences of her actions that it would have on Earth, Usagi underwent endurance training to keep the Silver Crystal at bay. For a while, she was able to hold her off. However when Usagi was forced to kill off a possessed Mamoru, Princess Serenity overcame her resistance and successfully destroyed the planet. Eventually, she realised the extent of her consequences when she destroyed the planet and Endymion encouraged her to use the Silver Crystal again to reverse the destruction. Serenity did and finally made peace with Usagi.

Appearance(as in looks)

Eventually, Serenity reincarnates as Usagi Tsukino in the 20th century. Usagi occasionally takes the form of Princess Serenity during the metaseries, often at climactic moments when more strength is needed than Sailor Moon can access.

In the manga, Serenity almost always has silver hair. In the anime, she is always blonde. In the live-action series, she has black hair, just like Usagi, and it is worn straight rather than in pigtails. This emphasizes the ambiguity of her identity before it is revealed that she is Usagi.

At climactic moments, Usagi as Serenity sometimes gains a pair of functioning angelic wings. She does this during the final battles of SuperS, to save Chibi-usa when the two of them encounter Pegasus and Sailor Stars, during the fight with the fully-possessed Galaxia when she grabs the Sword of Sealing. It is unclear if this power comes from her past life, is Usagi's own power, or came from Pegasus and the Sword of Sealing.

Trivia

  • A character from the cartoon Adventure Time named Fionna once wore a dress similar to hers.
    • Coincedentally, Fionna wore a hat with rabbit-like ears, and Princess Serenity's Earth incarnation is named Usagi, the Japanese word for rabbit.
  • In Act 41 (Yume/Dream 8), the Sailor Senshi suddenly recall a flashback of the celebration of the birth of Princess Serenity, and it shows Serenity as a baby and the Inner Senshi as children around the age of 6-9, implying that in the past, the Inner Senshi were older than Princess Serenity.
