Profile

Manga

Minako starred in her own series before Sailor Moon. This manga series was called Codename: Sailor V and detailed her adventures as Sailor V. Minako is introduced as lazy and unwilling to study--but also athletic and an avid gamer. She spent a lot of time at the Game Corner. She tends to misquote things on a regular basis, but still seems to have an ability to recall obscure facts when denouncing the enemy. She would become regularly distracted from her duties by romance, and fell in love with a different boy every chapter. Ultimately, she would fall for a man named "Phantom Ace" (Ace Kaitou) a costumed TV hero.

While in China, filming the Phantom Ace movie as his co-star, it was revealed that he was "Danburite" servant of the Dark Kingdom and her enemy all along--and also the reincarnation of a soldier who admired her in her previous life. This encounter unlocks her past life memories.

In the end, she seems to resign herself to choosing duty over love, and decides to search for the other Senshi, whoever and wherever they are. She joins the Police Force in order to pay for her quest.

Sailor V is featured throughout the beginning of the Sailor Moon manga, live action and anime as a hero to Usagi Tsukino. Later on it is discovered that Minako, Artemis and Luna used the Sailor V games to train Usagi for the battles to come. When Sailor Venus appeared to the soldiers, she announced herself as their Princess. It is revealed later that she is not the moon princess, but disguised herself as so to protect the Inner Senshi. As Sailor Venus, she is the leader of the Inner Senshi.

Anime

Minako first appears in episode 32. Her past (the time when she was still known as Sailor V) was later told in episode 42. Minako lived in London, where she fought youma as Sailor V. During this time she had two assistants: Alan and Katarina. Minako fell in love with Alan, but later on Minako discovered that Alan had fallen in love with Katarina and decided to let them believe she was dead and return home to Japan. There, she meets up with the other Sailor Senshi and saves them from one of Kunzite's traps. Later on in episode 49, Katarina returns and is being used by Kunzite as a youma to get to Sailor V, considering he believes Sailor V knows who the Sailor Senshi are. After she is restored by Sailor Moon and Sailor Venus, Katarina and Minako reunite and become friends again.

In the anime Minako is very ditzy, almost as much as Usagi and is very idealistic. She often makes references to old proverbs or sayings but misquotes them. She hates studying and wants to become an idol. Her hobbies include chasing idols, singing and volleyball.

PGSM

Compared to the other versions, Minako in the live-action series was an idol singer. There were a lot of differences about her. She is more strict, calm, smarter, and more observant. But sometimes she can still put a joke and a laugh. Unfortunatly, she has a disease and thought about getting surgery, but she said "the possibilities are around zero". Rei talked her into giving it a shot. Everybody was planning a surprise party for her. Unfortunatly, Minako died during surgery. Artemis first told Rei and she was just at a loss for words. During that same episode there is a scene with her singing at the party in heaven. Minako read a letter to her friends about her life and how much her friend meant to her. When Rei finished reading the letter she made in case she left all of them around the table start crying. Minako was very devoted to her mission and past life. She almost gave up singing for the mission however Rei talked her out of it and talked her out of living in the past. She was the closest to Rei among the Sailor Senshi. Also in the live action, she had a rival named Mio Kuroki, whom she was suspicious of working for the Dark Kingdom. More than once, her jealous and uncaring behavior gave her away to Minako. She has warned Usagi several times to stay away from Mio because she will do whatever it takes to cause pain and suffering in her life.

Appearance

Minako Aino was a cute and bubbly blond haired girl with blue eyes. She wore a red hairbow (which she started to wear after one of her crushes said that she would look prettier with a red hairbow), a white blouse with sailor neckerchief, a red scarf, blue skirt, white socks, and black shoes. In Sailor Moon Super S, she wore the same outfit but with notable differences, such as her neckercheif being replaced by a blue bow. In Sailor Moon: Sailor Stars, she wore the same school outfit as Usagi, Ami, and Makoto since all four of them were attending the same high school. Minako is described to be about 5'2" in height and possibly a bit taller in later seasons.

Development

In the transition between the Sailor V and Sailor Moon series, Minako's basic character design did not change. In fact, Naoko Takeuchi had written that the concept of Minako has barely changed at all from the first moment she was created. Run-Run, the magazine that serialized Sailor V, had intended to produce an OVA based on the character, but it went bankrupt before it could happen, so Minako was relegated to the sidelines as one of Sailor Moon's costars, to Takeuchi's regret.

Minako was the only Senshi of this Solar System whose civilian family name did not begin with the Japanese kanji character(s) directly denoting the corresponding celestial object. However, her family name begins with the character meaning "love" (愛), which still indirectly represented the planet of Venus, as Venus was the goddess of love in Western mythology. Her first name, Minako (美奈子), can alternatively be read as Venus (Biinasu). Also, her surname is a pun on a phrase meaning "of love," making her name sound like "Venus of Love." In an early DiC promotional tape that advertised the English-dubbed series to television stations, Minako was called Carrie.

Reception and Influence

Like the other members of the Sailor Senshi, the official Sailor Moon character popularity polls listed Minako Aino, Sailor V, and Sailor Venus as separate entities. In the 1992 poll, readers ranked Venus as the second most popular character, Minako being tenth and Sailor V being ninth, out of thirty eight choices. In the 1993 poll, now with fifty choices, Minako was the fifth most popular character, Sailor Venus was seventh, and Sailor V was tenth. In 1994, now with one more choice, Sailor Venus was the twelfth most popular character, Minako was the fourteenth, and Sailor V was the nineteenth most popular character. In the early 1996 poll, with the same number of choices, Sailor Venus was the seventeenth most popular character, Minako was again the fourteenth most popular. However, Sailor V did not place.

When writing about Codename: Sailor V, Brigid Alverson had described Minako as more energetic than Usagi. She also states that although she is not a good student, she is "a lively girl with a strong spirit, someone who does nothing by half measures", describing her as leaping through the panels of the manga. Katherine Dacey had also praised Minako's "can-do spirit", also noting that she wholeheartedly embraces her responsibilities as Sailor V. Ed Sizemore felt that Minako's sporty nature makes her more confident than Usagi, feeling that she is much more self-sufficient than her. Sean Gaffney describes Minako as hyperactive and proactive.

Since Minako had her powers the longest of the Sailor Senshi, Jennifer Brown suggessted that her sense of self-worth is more connected to her confidence in her powers.

Trivia

  • Her sailor-style school uniform during her junior high period was the most classic or orthodox among those of the Sailor Team. Such style reflected the Japanese militarized schooling system of the past, which could be traced back to the Meiji (明治) Period. However, it actually originated in Europe, where it was also worn by school boys and was not exclusively for girls as in Japan.
  • Minako's membership number in the Three Lights Fan Club was 278.
  • Takeuchi originally planned for the main story to center around Sailor V. The story got scrapped and ended up a series-within-a-series for Sailor Moon.
  • She was renamed 'Arianne' in the Swedish dub.
  • Minako was born October 22nd, her birthstone is Opal and she is a Libra, stated by 'Sailor Moon: Senshi Guide'
  • She has blood type B stated by 'Sailor Moon: Senshi Guide'
  • Takeuchi has said that the reason Venus looks so much like Sailor Moon was in fact because it was her duty to take Serenity's place to keep her from danger.
  • It is said that Minako enjoys Oolong tea, and her favorite foods are given as curry rice, ramen noodles, and stuffed dumplings, with her least favorite food being shiitake mushrooms. Her favorite colors are listed as red, orange, yellow, and pink. She likes birds, the flowers orange dandelions and orchids, and the gemstone topaz.
