"Answering the call from a new era, Sailor Neptune, here to fight with elegance!."
— Sailor Neptune' stock introduction

Michiru Kaio (海王 みちる, Kaiō Michiru) is the civilian identity and present-day incarnation of Sailor Neptune (セーラーネプチューン, Sērā Nepuchūn).

Etymology[]

Michiru's name means "to rise" while Kaio means "sea king." Her original English name Michelle a French feminine form of Michel, from the Hebrew name Michael meaning "Who is like God?"

Appearance[]

Civilian[]

Like several other characters from the original manga who appear in the anime, Michiru keeps the same appearance as her original incarnation, except with her hair shortened from long to medium length.

Sailor Guardian[]

Sailor Neptune' sailor uniform consists of a white, chest-armored leotard, a dark teal sailor collar, a dark teal choker with a dark green gem with golden accents attached to it. A dark teal skirt with a white puffy belt sat above it, and a dark blue bow at the chest and at the back. She wears lace-up loose dark teal high heels, as well as white wrist-length gloves with three dark teal arm bands at the ends, and a dark green circular gem at the center of her chest bow. Her leotard does not have any stripes on it, and her shoulder pads have three layers. A golden tiara with a dark green, oval-shaped gem is located on her forehead, and she wears gold studs and has a planetary object surrounded by a ring dangling from them made to look like her own guardian planet.

As Super Sailor Neptune, she wears an upgraded version of the Sailor Neptune sailor uniform. The only things that change are the length of her back bow, a dark green heart on her front bow, the sailor collar now features one white stripe, her choker has a yellow star attached to it, the shoulder pads last pad is more wing-like and translucent, her teal brooch is now a heart shape and her dark blue back bow was now enlarged and lengthened.

Personality[]

She is portrayed as elegant, sophisticated capable of sharp anger occasionally cold, and fully dedicated to her duty as a Sailor Guardian.

Background[]

Sailor Moon S[]

Michiru is Haruka Teno's lover. Naoko Takeuchi explains that a feminine person and a masculine person would be attracted to each other even if they're both girls.

They agree that anybody who has a talisman must die, even if this means one of them kills the other.

Sailor Moon Sailor Stars[]

She returns in Sailor Stars and this time they are clearly on the same side as the Inner Sailor Guardians, though eventually in episode 197 she and Haruka sell their souls to Galaxia to avoid death so that they can continue to live together. Under Galaxia's control, Michiru and Haruka steal the Star Seeds from Super Sailor Pluto and Super Sailor Saturn, killing them. They then attack Sailor Moon and the Sailor Starlights, using Deep Submerge and World Shaking, but the Sailor Starlights manage to protect Sailor Moon and Chibi Chibi from being injured. In episode 198, Michiru and Haruka reveal their betrayal as a ploy to obtain the powers needed to defeat Galaxia, breaking her control despite still wearing her bracelets and turning their heightened powers on Galaxia in a futile attempt to steal her Star Seed. Galaxia then removes their bracelets which are keeping them alive without their Star Seeds, with Haruka stating that they will be answering for their sins forever. Michiru says, "I can endure as long as I am with you, even if we are burned in the flames of hell". Sailor Moon is upset with them for deceiving them and actually believing her friends would betray her and Haruka asks Seiya to protect their princess because she is such a crybaby, which Michiru agrees with. Michiru reaches out to Haruka as they both die as she wants to feel her, managing to briefly connect their hands before they both fade away. Michiru, along with Haruka and everyone else, are revived in episode 200.
