"Mamoru and Usagi's Babysitting Mayhem" is the 7th episode of the 2nd season of the Sailor Moon anime and the 53rd episode overall. It aired in Japan on May 1, 1993. The DiC English dub title for this episode is "Much Ado About Babysitting" and it aired in North America on November 30, 1995.

Summary

When a Cardian attacks a nursery, Usagi and Mamoru have to watch over a baby together, even though Mamoru still doesn't remember their previous connection.

Plot

Ail and An decide to target babies and choose the Cardian Amaderasu. At a daycare, a Mother picks up her baby as Ami and Usagi walk past and ask Manami's name. At that moment, the Cardian appears and drains the babies and their caregivers of their energy before the two Senshi can react. Mamoru stumbles on the scene and the three of them ride in an ambulance back to the hospital. The Aliens are happy about the energy they gathered for the Makai Tree but are wary of the Sailor Guardians appearing.

The Mother and other victims are in poor condition and will take time to recover but Manami was protected by his mother and unharmed. With nobody to take care of the baby for three days, Mamoru volunteers to take care of the child and Usagi wants to help. Ami leaves the pair to do it together.

At Mamoru's Home, they play with the child and try to address his crying. Though the pair don't know why he is crying his thoughts are vocalized for the audience. Mamoru is very good with the child, but Usagi is not. She eventually leaves worrying she and Mamoru don't get along when walking home.

The next morning, Usagi is gone before Luna wakes up. She is shopping for supplies with Mamoru. An spots the pair from afar and is not happy. Minako, Ami, and Makoto run into and tease Usagi before taking her with them to Hikawa Shrine to discuss the attacks with Rei. The priestess senses the Cardian is aligned with the Sun and Usagi heads back to Mamoru. Rei senses it is close and the Inner Sailor Guardians leave to fend off another attack.

An arrives at Mamoru's home and knows about his arrangement with the Hospital. She tries to care for the baby but Manami does not like her. After being peed on twice, she leaves as Usagi arrives. Mamoru tells Usagi to stay and the pair see the baby walk and celebrate. Ami walks in and teases them before asking Usagi to join them.

Amaderasu shows up at another daycare but the other three Senshi arrive in time to interrupt her. Venus attacks with Crescent Beam but it doesn't stop the Cardian who puts all the babies in floating bubbles and knocks Venus, Mars, and Jupiter down. Usagi and Ami arrive and transform but start to have their energy drained. Moonlight Knight throws a rose at Amaderasu interrupting the energy drain and releasing the babies. Sailor Mercury uses a new attack Shabon Spray Freezing to freeze the Cardian and Sailor Moon finishes her with Moon Princess Halation. Usagi thanks Moonlight Knight as he leaves.

A day later, Manami's Mother has recovered early and thanks Usagi and Mamoru as they return him to her. Manami says "Mamoru" and "Usagi" before he leaves and the two celebrate.

Changes from the Manga

• These events did not occur in the manga.

Dub Changes

• The scene where Manami peed on An was cut from the DiC dub but it appeared in the Sailor Says segment anyway.
  • Also, in one scene, after An puts a new diaper on Manami and gives him his bottle, the scene cuts to a scene where An is talking to Mamoru with Manami still present. In this scene, Manami has no diaper on him.

• DiC's English dub's episode title is a reference to the William Shakespeare play Much Ado About Nothing.
• This is the first time that Sailor Mercury uses an offensive attack. She is able to freeze her target rather than only impairing their vision.
• This is the last in a string of episodes where the aliens target progressively younger people. They targeted middle school students, then kindergartners, and finally babies.
