Manga
Makoto Kino first appears as a tough 14 year old girl who transfers school amid rumors of being kicked out of her last one for violence. In Act 05 Makoto is revealed to be Sailor Jupiter who transforms by saying "Jupiter Power, Make up" in conjuction with her transformation pen. Makoto lives on her own due to the death of her parents and is shown becoming nervous when an airplane flies overhead.
Anime
Makoto is first introduced in episode 25 when she beats up a group of guys for picking on Usagi. Later in the episode, Umino tells Usagi Makoto was thrown out of her previous school for fighting and transfered to Azabu Jūban Junior High. Despite her tough appearance, she is very gentle and kind-hearted. She always wears pink rose earrings and a green hair tie that decorates her ponytail. After visiting the Game Center Crown with Usagi she meets Game Machine Joe where Makoto states he looks like someone she knew. After departing from the arcade Makoto follows Joe long enough to witness him being attacked by Zoicite. Once Usagi shows up, Zoicite leaves and Makoto follows Joe and the two get something to eat. When they are attacked by Zoicite again. Joe flees but is found by Zoicite again and Sailor Moon. After Joe turns into Gesen, Makoto interferes in the battle and Luna recognizes her to be one of the Sailor Senshi and tells her use her transformation pen and say "Jupiter Power, Make-Up, " allowing Makoto to transform into Sailor Jupiter and help defeat the Youma .
In the anime Makoto lives alone and the death of her parents is never explicity stated. Another way Makoto differs between the manga and anime is that in the manga she is seen becoming apprehensive any time an airplane flies overhead, whereas in the anime she boarded an airplane without showing fear.
PGSM
Makoto Kino is a very tough and tall 14-year-old girl who transfers to Juuban Middle School amid rumours that she was expelled from her old school for fighting. In Act 06, she see a group of boys picking on Usagi and comes to her rescue, Usagi thanks her and later takes her to meet with Rei Hino. Once they meet, Rei senses that something is different about her, both her and Luna suspects that she may be another Guardian. Like in other adaptions of the series Makaoto appears as a boy-crazy girl and because of that is lured into a trap set by the Dark Kingdom. Sailor Moons comes to save her and during the process Makoto transforms into Sailor Jupiter.
Although Makoto is a tough girl it is later revealed the true reasoing she left her old school, simply because she gelt she should move into a new area. She assumed it was due to being scorned by an ex-boyfriend, but it was actually her inutition telling her to move towhere the other Sailor Guardian were located. Makoto lives by herself in an apartment, the death of her parents is mentioned in a flashback but information regarding their deaths is never mentioned. Makoto is quite a tomboy, enjoying sports and exhibiting energy and strength of character. She does, however, have an intensely feminine side: she loves cooking, and cannot resist swooning over cute boys. Makoto is quite intuitive and very protective of others.
Appearance
Makoto is a 14-year-old (15 in S and SuperS, and 16 in StarS) teenage girl, who unusually tall for her age, standing at about 5'6" (possibly or at least an inch or two taller in later seasons.) She has brown hair, that she usually keeps tied up in a ponytail with a hair tie with two little green balls, and green eyes. For the time she was a student at Juuban Municipal Junior High School, she wore a different school uniform since Juuban's did not fit. She later wore that same school outfit as Usagi, Ami, and Makoto's, as they attended the same high school.
Forms
Sailor Jupiter
Makoto's Senshi identity, this was the form Makoto took on after she transformed for the first time. She transformed into this form in the Classic, R, and S season of the anime, the Dark Kingdom, Black Moon, and Infinity arcs of the manga, and for all of the episodes of the live-action series.
Super Sailor Jupiter
This is Makoto's second senshi uniform in the anime and manga that she transforms into first during Act 37 of the manga by using her Jupiter Crystal, given to her by her Sailor Power Guardian, but no new name is given. In episode 143 of the anime she has a similar transformation and the title Super Sailor Jupiter is used.
Princess Jupiter (manga only)
During the Silver Millennium, she was the ruler of the planet Jupiter and was given the duty to protect Princess Serenity. She wore a green strap dress with two green roses at the hips. The dress is very long and has a split starting from the little green rose on the left side. She has a green choker and a green ribbon with a red rose in the center in her hair. During her time as a Princess she dwelt in Io Castle.

Eternal Sailor Jupiter (manga only)
This was an manga exclusive transformation of Makoto's in Act 42, this form was unnamed but was similar to Eternal Sailor Moon albeit without wings.
Evil Sailor Jupiter (manga only)
This was a manga exclusive form of Makoto after she was killed by Sailor Galaxia and revived in Act 49. She wears bracelets similar to Sailor Galaxia and fights for her to kill Sailor Moon.
Development
Makoto's concept art in English
In an early DiC promotional tape that advertised the English-dubbed series to television stations, Makoto was called Sarah. Makoto was present in the original propsoal for the Codename: Sailor V anime; however, with a name of Mamoru Chino. It was later confirmed this character was eventually turned into Makoto, her character was meant to be not only tough, but the leader of a female gang and a smoker.
Recption and Influence
Official Sailor Moon character popularity polls listed Makoto Kino and Sailor Jupiter as separate entries, like many other characters. In 1992 out of thirty eight choices Makoto was ranked eleventh and Sailor Jupiter at fifth. The following year with fiftfy choices Sailor Jupiter was eleventh and Makoto was twelfth. In 1994 with fifty one choices Sailor Jupiter was seventeenth while Makoto was eigthteenth. In early 1996 our of fifty one choices Makoto was ranked twenty third most popular while Sailor Jupiter ranked twenth seventh.
Trivia
- Makoto's very first appearance in the manga was at the end of Act 4, even though her identity wasn't revealed until Act 5.
- The source of Makoto's incoome has been a debate among the fans. During the anime series Makoto was only 14-15 years old. An explanation behind how she supported herself was never given, but a popular theory is that she lives off an inheritance left behind by her parents.
- Makoto's school uniform was further representation of her tough girl status, that being the style for those girls at the time. However in PGSM the outfit was changed, most likely because of the change in fashion and wasn't appropriate for the show's audience.
- Makoto's membership number for the Three Lights Fan Club was 1606.
- Makoto's first name is pronounced the same as the words meaning "sincere" (誠) and "truth" (真). Originally, it was "Mamoru," meaning "to guard/protect."
- Her name was probably changed because Tuxedo Mask's name became Mamoru.
- Since episode 50, in the DiC dub of episode 50 there have been constant jokes made about Makoto's "talent". In the episode Makoto said she would like to play the part of Snow White because of her "talent", at the time on the screen Makoto's breasts were being shown prominently.
- Amongst the Inner Senshi, Makoto/Sailor Jupiter was the strongest physical fighter (while Usagi/Sailor Moon would be the strongest in terms of magical power). However, in episode 96 during the S season, she and Haruka/Sailor Uranus engaged in a scuffle which indicated that Haruka was even stronger. However, Haruka's wrist was injured by a blow from Makoto, and she noted that Makoto was perhaps an equal match.
- Jupiter, her guardian planet, is the largest planet in the Solar System. This cloud cloaked giant is also notable for its turbulent weather (e.g. huge storms, lightning, etc.).
- During the planning stages of fore-running series Codename: Sailor V, Makoto was to appear in it called Mamoru Chino, who was strong, like her sailor counterpart, but was the leader of a girl-gang and smokes.
- A running gag in the series is that Makoto finds every boy she meets to look like "the classmate who broke her heart". In the manga and the original Japanese version of the anime, he remains unnamed, but in the English dub, she refers to him as Freddy.
- In the end of the PGSM Special Act, Makoto gets engaged to Motoki.
- Her hair resembles Natsuhi Ushiromiya's hair from the Umineko Series.
- It is said that Makoto loves all foods, but especially cherry pie and meatloaf. Her most closely held dream is to get married and own an cake and flower shop. She loves romance novels, shopping and video games. Her favorite colors are pink and green (colors of her Senshi fuku) and her favorite gemstone is an emerald. Her favorite flower is a rose, and her favorite animals are horses and tropical fish. She hates cheaters. It is also said her favorite class is home economics, and her least favorite is physics.
- In the manga, it shown Makoto keeps many plants in her apartment.
