Luna is Usagi's black guardian cat, as well as her and the other Sailor Senshi's adviser. She lives with Usagi and she is shown growing close to Artemis, another feline guardian who belongs to Minako Aino/Sailor Venus. This is the original depiction of the character created by Naoko Takeuchi.

Nomenclature & Etymology

Appearance

In her cat form, Luna is black with sleek fur and has a crescent moon on her forehead. She is very petite with long whiskers.

In her human form, Luna is a young woman with curly, long black hair which reaches her waist. Her forehead bears the same yellow crescent moon that she wears as a cat, and which are also featured on her earrings. A yellow ribbon is tied into a bow around her neck as well as crescent moon necklace. She also has an anklet of the same design above her foot. She wears an elegant, flowing gown which is yellow and black and is shorter in the front than in the back. Her eyes are aqua blue, and she appears to retain her cat-like features.

Background

Manga

In the manga, Sailor Tin Nyanko says that Luna, Artemis and Diana are creatures of the planet Mau.

Anime

Live Action

In her first form in the live-action series Luna is a living plush toy. She came down from the moon to help guide the Sailor Senshi, but she had forgotten much of her past until she was showered in the light of the Silver Crystal. In her plush form, Luna can produce items from the Crescent Moon on her forehead and detect both Senshi and youma. She often accompanies the Senshi by tagging along in their bags.

Once Sailor Moon turned into the Princess, Luna was able to use her human form which was a side effect of the Silver Crystal. She maintains her catlike habits while in human form. She takes the form of a child, but when she transforms into Sailor Luna proves to be strong. She turned back into a cat if she sneezed or was shocked. Like Usagi, Luna has a Moonlight Stick to attack with, but she transforms it into a Harisen when she wants to attack directly

Crystal

Luna first appears in episode one. In the first scene she appears in, Usagi accidentally steps on her. After realizing what she did, Usagi fawns over her, apologizes, and removes the bandages covering the crescent moon symbol on Luna's head. They then stare at each other for a moment until Usagi realizes that she is late to school and leaves. Later when Usagi is at Game Center Crown, Luna sees her again. Finally, she appears once again in Usagi's room and wakes up Usagi, who was sleeping at the time, by scratching her face. When Usagi is awakened, Luna tells her that she is destined to become a Sailor Senshi and gives Usagi the broochthat allows Usagi to transform into Sailor Moon. After Usagi transforms, Luna leads her to where Morgais. During Sailor Moon and Morga's fight, Luna gives Sailor Moon tips on what to do to harm her enemy and teaches her a new attack called Moon Tiara Boomerang. At the end of the episode, Luna is seen with Usagi, who realizes that the events from the day before actually happened and that she wasn't dreaming.

In Act 14, her human form is shown.
