Sailor moon saturn
"I am an emissary from the abyss of Death. Protected by Saturn, the Outer Planet of Destruction, the Guardian of Silence. I am Sailor Saturn."
— Sailor Saturn's Introduction

Hotaru Tomoe (土萠 ほたる, Tomoe Hotaru) is the daughter of Souichi Tomoe and Keiko Tomoe, and the civilian identity and present-day incarnation of Sailor Saturn (セーラーサターン, Seeraa Sataan). She is a close friend of Chibiusa and the last of the Outer Sailor Guardians to awaken.

Appearance[]

Civilian[]

Hotaru mainly appears to have a black shoulder-length bob with purple shine on front and purple eyes. Like both Haruka and Michiru, who disguised themselves as students in Mugen Academy, Hotaru wears the standard Mugen Academy winter school uniform, as she wears blue stockings and black flats. In one episode, both of her arms and legs are revealed to be artificial before it regenerates back to her normal arms and legs.

Sailor Senshi[]

In her standard Sailor form, Saturn has short, black hair, violet eyes, and pale skin. Her fuku consists of a dark blue-violet choker, collar, tiara gem, elbow fittings of gloves, miniskirt, and boots. Her choker has a six-pointed star. Her earrings are white pearls adorned with a ring to look like her own guardian planet, with white dagger pendants hanging from them. The bows of her fuku are pale maroon. Her gloves have pointy elbow fittings. Her collar does not have any stripes.

She wears knee-high boots laced up in the front. Her shoulder pads resemble flower petals and she has a white crystal on the center of her front bow similar to a pure heart crystal.

Personality[]

In the Infinity arc, Hotaru is timid, quiet and always keeps to herself. Never having had any real friends, she was surprised yet happy to have met Chibiusa. She had growing fears of losing herself someday and struggled to keep her dark side in check, so as not to harm those she held most dear. She and Sailor Saturn are initially entirely different entities with their own personalities. Saturn is cold, indifferent, and analytical and will do what needs to be done.

When she is reborn, as seen in Eternal and Cosmos, she is a cheerful and highly gifted child. She loves reading and can memorize entire books. She sometimes switches to a colder personality which is more reminiscent of Saturn. When she reawakens to her powers, she regains the memories of all of her past lives and in this new person Hotaru and Sailor Saturn are one and the same.

Information[]

Sailor Saturn was isolated from the Silver Millennium. She remained in slumber on the planet Saturn, only to be awakened when the kingdom was beyond revival. After the Silver Millennium was destroyed by the Dark Kingdom, with the death of Princess Serenity, the three special talismans activated to awaken her. Once awakened, she swung her Silence Glaive and ended all life, to be reborn. Sailor Saturn also perished, and she was reborn as a human girl, Hotaru Tomoe, unless the worst should occur again, she will never be awakened.

At her birth, the powers of Saturn had lain dormant within her. At the age of six, she was in a lab accident that took the life of her mother Keiko, leaving her terribly injured and in a coma. While her father was experimenting on her to save her life, a dark force arrived and made a deal to help him save her. The being provided a Daimon egg, which Souichi placed in his daughter, which grew in power within her over the next few years.

Sailor Moon Crystal Season III[]

One night, Hotaru is asleep in her room, dreaming about three shadowed figures that are carrying three mystical treasures until she awakens out of fright. Some time later, Hotaru has another seizure and is offered assistance by Chibiusa, which she refuses; stating that she always has these attacks. Still in pain, she watches in shock when a Daimon appears out of nowhere and begins wreaking havoc. She's even more confused when she sees Usagi and Chibiusa transform into Sailor Moon and Sailor Chibi Moon. She later notices a cut on Sailor Chibi Moon's elbow and heals it. She tells Chibiusa to leave before the security guards came and introduces herself before leaving. In a dark hallway, Hotaru still feels weak when Kaolinite appears, saying that these attacks were quite worrisome. She ignores her and tried to walk away, but is stopped by the appearance of her father. She warns Kaolinite not to suck up to her father as she did not like her coming into her family. In her room, her father gives her a crystal amulet, that he says would make her feel better. Holding it to her chest, Hotaru suddenly notices that she did indeed feel better and stronger than before. However, she expresses fear and gets worried of how long her body would hold up.

Some nights later, she begins noticing that she could not suppress the dark being within her any longer. She tries harder, but was quickly overwhelmed by the being. By the time Sailor Chibi Moon arrives to protect Hotaru from the Outer Senshi, the evil spirit within her takes full control of Hotaru's body, transforming it into a grown woman, calling herself Mistress 9, who immediately steals Chibiusa's Silver Crystal, along with Chibiusa's soul. Within the body, Hotaru is ensnared in thorny vines, but she still fights against Mistress 9's control. Hotaru's capable of partially suppressing it from using Chibiusa's Silver Crystal, but can not prevent her from swallowing it completely. Hotaru remains strong and tries to stop the invader from gaining more power. She leads the Silver Crystal to Chibiusa's soul and encourages her best friend to fight on and that she would always be there to protect her. She hugged Chibiusa, saying that she would definitely save her and the Silver Crystal from being destroyed. She expresses sadness, feeling the destruction of her father.

She remains obstinate and resolved to stop Mistress 9 from escaping her body and absorbing the spirits' of Chibiusa, and the four Inner Sailor Guardians. She cannot stop Mistress 9 from breaking out of her body, so Hotaru takes the inner Senshi and Chibiusa's souls, and the Silver Crystal, out of the body and returns them to their owners. Knowing that she has little strength left, she appeared at Mamoru's apartment and returns the soul and the Silver Crystal to their rightful owner. She cries, glad that her only real friend was safe again. As Mistress 9 begins to grow even stronger, and as her consciousness began to fade away, she admitted how glad she was to have met Chibiusa and that she truly loved her. Mistress 9 finally breaks out of the body and Hotaru fades away.

Upon the departure of the near-dead Pharaoh 90, Hotaru was reborn as an infant by Sailor Moon. Seeing the symbol of Saturn appear on her forehead, the Senshi knew the Guardian of Silence had been reborn. She was picked up by Super Sailor Neptune, who vowed that she, Super Sailor Uranus and Super Sailor Pluto would raise her from then on.

Sailor Moon Eternal[]

Hotaru has been raised by Haruka, Michiru and Setsuna at their home as they live a peaceful life in the 6 months since the battle with the Death Busters. Hotaru is a happy child who enjoys her time with her parents while learning everything she can at an amazing rate. Since the day of the solar eclipse, Haruka, Michiru, and Setsuna realize an enemy is on Earth, but they, like the Inner Sailor Guardians, have lost the ability to transform. This also accelerated Hotaru's growth and she grew from a baby to a little girl. When Hotaru plays the violin during one of Michiru's lessons, ghostly apparitions of Helios and Chibiusa appear which ends with Chibiusa crying over Helios' dead body. Michiru sees Hotaru go from a happy child to a grim and serious one and worries Sailor Saturn may be awakening. Hotaru simulates the birth of the solar system, with Haruka's help, and runs it until the present day when they see darkness engulf the Earth and Moon. The adults know something is wrong and suspect their peaceful life is ending but try to ignore it. Sailor Saturn appears in a mirror and talks to Hotaru saying she is a part of her which is asleep and it is time to wake up. Hotaru regains the memories of her past life and she and Saturn become one and the same. The awakened Hotaru walks in on the others and tells them she is different than she was before and its time for them to return and protect the ones they care for. While holding her own Saturn Crystal, she gives Haruka, Michiru, and Setsuna their Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto Sailor Crystals restoring their ability to transform as they leave to help the others.

Hotaru and the others arrive at the Dead Moon Circus to find the Inner Sailor Guardians in trouble against the Amazoness Quartet and she transforms into Super Sailor Saturn and helps them with the others. They hold the Quartet back and eventually forcing them to retreat. Saturn reunites with Super Sailor Chibi Moon and, as they chase after the girls, Hotaru tells Chibiusa she grew-up so quickly because she wanted to fight alongside her. They corner the Quartet inside of a Circus tent and while their foes were out for blood Sailor Saturn was able to tell they were not normal enemies but corrupted Sailor Guardians. They denied they were trapped in a nightmare at first but as Hotaru and Chibiusa started getting through to them Zirconia arrived and trapped them all. Hotaru became a prisoner of Queen Nehelenia within the Mirror World with the other girls.

Eventually, Super Sailor Moon came and saved her and Chibiusa. Before escaping the mirror world, Sailor Saturn took the Amazon Stones the Quartet were still trapped in for safekeeping. Saturn joins the others to Elysion and rejects Nehelenia's notion that her curse destroyed the Silver Millennium. When Usagi took back her Silver Crystal, Hotaru took her Princess form and her Sailor Power Guardian, Guardian Saturn, arrived and asked her to send power from Titan Castle to Usagi's Holy Moon Chalice and this power, and that of the other Guardians, combined and saw them take their Eternal forms and destroy Nehelenia.

After Usagi and Mamoru's coronation, Saturn brought the Amazon stones to Usagi and asked her to free them. Out of the stones came the Sailor Quartet: the future guardians of Chibiusa who were forcibly awakened early and enslaved by the Dead Moon. Hotaru promised Sailor Ceres, Sailor Pallas Sailor Juno, and Sailor Vesta that she would keep their Princess safe as they return to their slumber awaiting the day of their true awakening. Hotaru returned to the surface with the other Guardians and began to enjoy her newly earned peace alongside Chibiusa.
