"Usagi's Eternal Wish: A Brand New Life" is the 46th and final episode of the 1st season of the Sailor Moon anime and the 46th episode overall. It aired in Japan on February 27, 1993. In the DiC English dub, this episode, as well as the previous episode, were heavily edited and combined into one episode titled "Day of Destiny", and it aired in North America on November 3, 1995.

Summary[]

With her friends dead, Sailor Moon is transported inside the Dark Kingdom to face Queen Beryl and the brainwashed Prince Endymion.

Plot[]

Sailor Moon had just reached the entrance to the Dark Kingdom. She was being watched by Queen Beryl, who teleported Usagi into the throne room via an energy ball. The disoriented Sailor Moon watched as light shone on Queen Beryl, who welcomed the "Princess" to her kingdom, as well as revealing Endymion kissing Beryl's hand with a disturbed expression.

Under Beryl's orders, Endymion attacked Sailor Moon and she dodged; she then attempted to use Moon Healing Escalation to restore Mamoru's memory, although it had no effect. Queen Beryl gloated that Queen Metalia had completely corrupted Mamoru and that her efforts to heal him were useless. After sneaking up on Sailor Moon, he threw a black rose at her commenting: "Sailor Moon...die." The rose stem expanded and tied up Sailor Moon, electrocuting her. Sailor Moon screamed out in pain, unable to believe that the man she loved would become so sadistic. The rose disappeared and Endymion picked up Sailor Moon by the neck, before proceeding to blast her with energy.

Queen Beryl finally called a halt to the torture and Endymion tossed Sailor Moon aside. She landed next to the Moon Stick, but didn't have the strength to grab it. Queen Beryl ordered Endymion to decapitate her while Usagi desperately reached for the Moon Stick. Queen Beryl gloated about how Usagi's friends have died for nothing as Queen Metalia has been fully awakened. Usagi, in desperation, finally stands up to Endymion and uses Moon Tiara Action on Endymion, causing him to collapse in pain. Even Sailor Moon seems traumatized by her own actions at this point. Queen Metalia's power forced Endymion to rise, sword upraised and ready to strike. As Usagi yelled for him to stop, he witnessed the sight of Sailor Moon kneeling, holding the orgel out to him and pleading him to remember her. Unwillingly, he touched it and a backlash flooded him with energy. Memories flooded within him, including a vision of a young Mamoru being comforted by Usagi.

Mamoru has been completely healed, dropping his sword as he remembers Sailor Moon. Irate, Queen Beryl throws an enormous rock pillar to kill them both in fury for losing Endymion to Serenity again. Tuxedo Mask throws a red rose, shattering the rock pillar. The rose hits Queen Beryl, although several rock fragments strike into Mamoru's back as he protects Usagi. Queen Beryl tried to shrug off the attack, but realized that Mamoru's love for Usagi was destroying her, causing her very skin to crack apart. She melted through the floor, resistant to believe their love is powerful enough to kill her.

Mamoru, in his dying breath, tells Sailor Moon to escape as the cavern began falling apart. Sailor Moon realizes that Mamoru is dead and begins sobbing over the loss of his life, embracing him as she cries.

Beryl kneels before Queen Metalia, and begs her for power enough to "defeat that hateful girl". Queen Metalia, ready to fully awaken, informs Beryl that "the time has come to instill hatred and greed into all living things." The essence of Queen Metalia absorbed into Queen Beryl's body and they merged together.

Sailor Moon is about to kiss Mamoru, but stops herself, guilty that her best friends died without kissing the boy they liked. Sailor Moon promises Mamoru to not run away and leaves the collapsing cavern to fight Queen Beryl.

Queen Metalia merged with Beryl, warping her body to be about 50 feet tall, known as Super Beryl. As she exulted in her power, she noticed the arrival of the only other living person, Sailor Moon. As Super Beryl attacks Sailor Moon, an enormous avalanche envelops Sailor Moon and forms an ice mountain, as happened with the other Sailor Senshi in the previous episode. However, the ice mountain suddenly flattens out on the top like a platform, revealing Princess Serenity standing atop it with her eyes closed, serenely holding the Moon Stick.

In Japan, the weather became turbulent and power was draining away. Artemis and Luna both realize that Queen Metalia had awakened and the world is ending. Luna tried to run to where the Sailor Senshi were, but Artemis stopped her. Luna knew that Usagi could stop Queen Metalia, but only by using the full power of the Silver Crystal. If she did, Usagi would die as Queen Serenity did. Crying, Luna called out and begged Usagi not to release the power of the Silver Crystal, in fear she would die.

As the two combatants faced each other, Super Beryl attacks with the power of darkness, and Princess Serenity charges up Moon Healing Escalation in return. Their beams of energy collide as Super Beryl's darkness meets with a powerful barrier protecting Princess Serenity. Super Beryl intensified her attack and the protective barrier started shrinking. Princess Serenity was unable to fight Super Beryl alone, but called on her recently departed friends for strength. She remembered talking with all of them about their hopes and dreams for the future, which encouraged her to push forward.

The spirits of the four Sailor Guardians joined Princess Serenity and each invoked their power: "Mercury Power!...Mars Power!...Jupiter Power!...Venus Power!...Moon Prism Power!". The Silver Crystal threw a massive energy ball at Super Beryl, completely consuming her. Serenity transformed back into the exhausted Sailor Moon, who collapsed and holding onto life by a thread whispered her thanks to everyone.

The energy ball thrown off by the Silver Crystal kept expanding, engulfing Sailor Moon's body as well as the Moon Stick and continuously grew. It absorbed the ice trees and bodies of the four Sailor Senshi and still kept growing. All of the underground Dark Kingdom and Mamoru was absorbed and continued to grow. It encompassed the entire North Pole region and was easily visible from space and the Moon. Usagi, in a voice-over, monologues that she misses doing mundane things, such as window shopping with her friends, waking up late, being punished, and simply having a peaceful life. As Usagi longs for her peaceful life once more, the Silver Crystal grants a miracle and returns her to her ordinary life, before any of the events of the series had begun.

Eventually we see morning at the Tsukino house, where an alarm clock was cheeping. Usagi tried to return to sleep, before realizing that she was going to be late and zooming out the door. Luna and Artemis comment that the girl's memories of each other, as well as Usagi and Mamoru's memories have all been erased, as have all their memories of being Sailor Senshi.

As she was running to school, Makoto raced past her, as she was late too. Rei ignored the crazy schoolgirl racing by the temple as Minako waited for her bus. At school, the scores for the latest test were posted, and Ami Mizuno was #1 (again). Usagi and Naru glared enviously as the quiet girl walked past them. On her way home, a frustrated Usagi threw her test paper over her shoulder, hitting Mamoru. Embarrassed (she got 30/100), she grabs it back and glares at him. As Naru comments Usagi may have met her soulmate back there, Usagi tells Naru about her ideal man, a dashing superhero who will always rescue her when she is in danger. As Luna comments on the sad fact that they don't know each other, Artemis reminds her they always have the chance to meet and become friends again.

Dub Changes[]

  • The song that played during the battle against Queen Beryl was "Moonlight Densetsu." In the DiC dub, it was replaced with "Carry On". The Spanish, German, and Cantonese dubs used an instrumental version of "Moonlight Densetsu." The Korean and Hebrew dubs replaced the song with dubbed versions. In the Indonesian, Greek, Swedish, Italian, Portuguese, and Mandarin dubs the song was removed completely without a replacement.
  • The song that played at the end of the episode was "You're Just My Love". In the English dub, it was replaced with "It's a New Day". In the Korean dub. the song was replaced with an instrumental piece of music from the soundtrack of the movie "Kiki's Delivery Service." The song was dubbed in the Hebrew dub. In the Catalan dub, it was replaced with instrumental music. In the Greek, Swedish, Italian, Portuguese, and Mandarin dubs, the song was removed completely without a replacement.
  • DiC combined this episode and the previous episode, causing many scenes to be cut or shortened:
    • The removal of the deaths of the Sailor Senshi caused the scene where Sailor Moon talks to the ghost of the Sailor Senshi to be removed, however, the scene ends up appearing in the Sailor Says segment. Also in the English dub, the flashback scene from episode 22 was kept intact even though the moment when Usagi and Mamoru fell off the balcony was cut in the English dub of that episode.
    • The fight between Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask was severely cut for time and violence.
    • Shots of the black spots on the sun from the Dark Kingdom growing.
    • Tuxedo Mask being fatally struck by black crystal shards, and the entire scene and speech with Tuxedo Mask dying after Beryl fled was cut.
    • When Beryl is struck by the rose, it is not shown the rose embedded in her, the energy of love surging within the rose, or her skin cracking because of it.
    • The shot of Sailor Moon falling into the ice, along with the Moon Stick, after destroying Super Beryl was cut, though the shot was still used in a flashback in the episode For Love and Justice! A Sailor Senshi Once Again.
    • Since the scene from an earlier episode showing Metaria possessing Prince Endymion was cut, the dub has Beryl simply state "The spell I cast is too strong.
  • In the Korean dub, when the Inner Senshi said their final words Sailor Mars' speech was cut and was replaced with the silhouettes of Usagi and Mamoru shown at the end of the episode.
  • This episode and the previous one were omitted from the first run of the Polish version. They were later aired by TV4, though only late at night.
