Dispute Over Love: Minako and Makoto’s Conflict

"Dispute Over Love: Minako and Makoto’s Conflict" is the 19th episode of the 2nd season of the Sailor Moon anime and the 65th episode overall. It aired in Japan on August 14, 1993. The DiC English dub title for this episode is "A Charmed Life" and it aired in North America on November 14, 1995.

Summary[]

Makoto and Minako get into a fight and refuse to speak to each other, while Calaveras and Petz take over a Crystal Point, a fortune-telling and jewelry store, to spread Dark Power.

Plot[]

Minako is waiting in a park and annoyed at all the couples nearby. Makoto arrives late and they spot Chibiusa telling two boys to go away. Makoto and Minako start to argue about their love lives and Usagi arrives. Chibiusa teases all three for being stuck on men who dumped them.

The Spectre Sisters talk about their dislike of Tokyo and Rubeus assigns a Crystal Point for Calaveras to take care of. She initially declines but changes her mind too late to find out Petz volunteered to take it on. She summons Jamanen to help her and she leaves to join her sister.

Makoto and Minako are mad at each-other and they and Usagi go into a store which sells wish granting gems. It is being run by the two Sisters. The gems do the opposite of what is wished on them and spreads dark power. Inside, the three girls encounter the shop keepers, Petz and Calerveras, who offer a gemstones which can bring back their loves. Makoto and Minako make up and decide they don't need the gems, but Mamoru arrives with Chibiusa and Usagi does not feel the same and he leaves.

Chibiusa blames Usagi for him leaving and they argue. The shopkeepers get mad at the girls' talk of love, summon Jamanen, and remove their disguises to start to attack. Before they can, Minako uses a fire extinguisher to smoke out the store and she transforms with Venus Star Power, Make Up and Makoto with Jupiter Star Power, Make Up. The duos fight and Sailor Venus is captured by Calaveras and Makoto by the Droid. Sailor Mars arrives alongside Sailor Mercury and saves them with Burning Mandala. Jupiter attacks with Sparkling Wide Pressure, and Venus with Venus Love-Me Chain and the two Spectre Sisters retreat leaving Jamanen. Usagi leaves Chibiusa behind in a closet and transforms and arrives to find the Inner Sailor Guardians tied up. Sailor Moon finishes the droid with Moon Princess Halation.

All the girls go to a restaurant together.

Changes from the Manga[]

These events never happened in the manga.
Sailor Venus uses Venus Love-Me Chain for the first time during the Dark Kingdom Arc.
- Her Chain was an item she carried on her outfit rather than simply appearing while performing the attack.

Dub Changes[]

In the original and Viz Media English Dub, Petz demanded Usagi and Chibiusa to stop fighting, as Calaveras told Petz to calm down. In the DiC English dub, Petz demanded Usagi and Chibiusa to leave as Calaveras told Petz to calm down as they'll need those girls to complete their mission.
The shot where the real jewelry store employees are shown unconscious and captive in the shop's back room is removed from the DiC dub. This was presumably due to the implied nudity, as Petz and Calaveras apparently stole the women's clothing to use as disguises.

This was the last episode that Genaro Vásquez voiced Darien and Kelvin in the Mexican dub.
Sailor Venus and Sailor Jupiter would get new attacks in the same episode again during SuperS episode, Confrontation in Dreams! Minako and Makoto's Broken Friendship, which would play the same plot of Minako and Makoto at odds with one another.
In the DiC English dub, edited stock footage of Jupiter Power, Make Up and Venus Power, Make Up was used instead of editing the new transformations. With Jupiter Star Power, Make Up, DiC only sliced the Jupiter’s Star Power transformation with the her first full transformation and their added lightning special effects when Jupiter poses; this is probably due to part of Makoto’s buttocks appearing while she is going into her final pose. With Venus Star Power, Make Up, however, Venus’ end pose from her Star Power transformation is used.
