“Usagi's Confusion: Is Tuxedo Mask Evil?” is the 36th episode of the 1st season of the Sailor Moon anime and the 36th of the overall series. It aired in Japan on December 12, 1992. The DiC English dub title for this episode is "Bad Hair Day" and it aired in North America on October 24, 1995.
Summary[]
Minako tries to cheer Usagi up by taking her to a hair salon, leading to the discovery that Tuxedo Mask is still alive, but now very different.
Plot[]
Usagi has a nightmare, worrying if Tuxedo Mask is safe. Luna (overhearing her talk in her sleep) tries to encourage Usagi, though she gets crushed by Usagi's arm; Luna realizes how worried Usagi is, who begins crying in her sleep.
At school, Naru and other girls were looking at an advertisement for a new hair salon put out by the famous hair designer Kariko Tokoyama. Naru excitedly tells Usagi about free haircuts for the store's opening celebration, though Usagi is quietly worried about Tuxedo Mask and is unresponsive. Naru becomes worried about Usagi.
The other girls Sailor Senshi met at the park to discuss Usagi needing to take more responsibility as the Princess. Artemis says needs to be more responsible, though Rei empathizes with Usagi. Makoto is surprised, but remembers what Rei said to Usagi and apologizes.
Usagi listens to the melody from the orgel, crying and worrying over Tuxedo Mask. Minako came up to Usagi's room after letting herself in. She suggested Usagi change her hairstyle to cheer herself up. Usagi lets her hair down, and Minako brushes it, suggesting some hairstyles for Usagi.
At the Dark Kingdom, Queen Beryl states that they have to get the Silver Crystal quickly, wanting to find out the true identity of Sailor Moon. Kunzite says that he had a strand of Sailor Moon's hair, taken from a previous battle, promising to find out Sailor Moon's identity.
Minako and Usagi went to the new hair salon, where Minako asked Kariko to look at Usagi's hair. Kariko said that it was beautiful hair and led Usagi to the chair. Kariko washed Usagi's hair while other girls were getting hair treatments. However, it was secretly a DNA scanner that checked their hair to try to identify Sailor Moon, though Kariko doesn't realize Usagi is Sailor Moon.
As Minako sat and waited for Usagi, one of the assistants asked Minako to go to a hair steamer. Minako said that she just came with her friend, but the assistant encouraged her to try it out because it was free. Minako went, though the machine mistook a strand of Usagi's hair mixed with hers for Usagi. This convinced Kariko that Minako was Sailor Moon.
Usagi was in the middle of her shampoo, but Kariko left to go to Minako. Then the other assistants sprayed hairspray in the air to knock out all the customers. Kariko choked Minako and asked for the Silver Crystal. Minako eventually realized what happened, while Usagi snuck away to transform. When Kariko asked for the Silver Crystal again, Minako refuses, so Kariko and her assistants turned into a Youma.
Usagi transformed, going out to face the Youma. Mitsuami discovered that Minako isn't Sailor Moon and attacked Sailor Moon, and Minako passed out. Sailor Moon tried to dodge, though Mitsuami kept attacking. Then Sailor Moon threw a small bottle of talcum powder at the Youma. While the Youma was distracted, Sailor Moon tried to use her Moon Stick. When she said, "Moon Healing.." a rose came and hit the Moon Stick away. Sailor Moon turned around and saw Tuxedo Mask sitting in the chair. Sailor Moon was very happy, and there were tears in her eyes. But when she called out to him, Tuxedo Mask said, "I'm not something like that. I'm Endymion from the Dark Kingdom. Sailor Moon, give me the Silver Crystal!"
The Youma got ready to attack again. After Sailor Moon dodged the attack, Tuxedo Mask ordered the Youma to get the Silver Crystal. Sailor Moon couldn't believe Tuxedo Mask had become evil. Sailor Moon ran outside away from the Youma, both of them following her.
Minako woke up and transformed into Sailor Venus. Sailor Moon was still running away through the town. Tuxedo Mask told the Youma to hurry. Then, Sailor Moon fell and the Youma caught up to her, though the other Sailor Senshi arrived to save her. Sailor Mars and Jupiter combined Fire Soul and Supreme Thunder, destroying her weapons and delaying her. Then, Sailor Mercury used Shabon Spray and Sailor Moon used Moon Healing Escalation to turn the Youma back into Kariko and her assistants.
Sailor Mars also started crying for the same reasons as Usagi when she saw Tuxedo Mask, though Sailor Venus said that it was the commander of the Dark Kingdom, Endymion, leaving Sailor Mars devastated. Sailor Mercury asked if he was going to fight them; Endymion said that though he doesn't like to fight girls, he would if necessary. However, Queen Beryl told Endymion to retreat, and he left.
Endymion went back to the Dark Kingdom and asked why he was called back; Queen Metalia stated that she can't let Endymion die.
Later, the girls were outside the hair salon. Usagi, watching Kariko, promises to not let any more innocents get involved in their battle. Artemis was happy that Usagi grew up, though Usagi became very happy that Tuxedo Mask is alive. Usagi also assumes that he's held captive by the Dark Kingdom and resolves to bring him back with the power of her love.

- Usagi doesn't go to a hair salon. Her friends go to her house and help her with her hair, which had rapidly grown longer.
- The first time Usagi sees Mamoru after being kidnapped, he introduces himself as an old friend of Motoki, named Endou.
- Minako uses the pen she used to transform into Sailor V to transform into Sailor Venus instead of having one with a similar top design as Ami, Rei and Makoto's pens.
- By the time the brainwashed Prince Endymion awoke, Kunzite was already dead.

- This episode featured the first appearance of Evil Endymion and his black roses.
- Minako's transformation phrase, Venus Power, Make Up, first appeared in this episode, as well as her Transformation Pen.
- When Sailor Venus poses, the sparkle in her right eye is bigger than her left eye. This was corrected in episode 42.
- Moon Healing Escalation received new background music and an upgraded animation starting with this episode.
- In the Thai dub, when Minako transformed into Sailor Venus, the first two words of the original audio ("Venus Power...") could be heard before the Thai voice actress's voice.
