Nomenclature & Etymology[]

Etymology[]

Esmeraude's name is taken from the obsolete French word for emerald.

Appearance[]

Esmeraude has lime green hair, and is shown to wear very ostentatious clothing including several gemstones. She wears a dark green dress with three teal ovular gems in the center, green elbow-length gloves with the same type of gemstone by the wrist, as well as knee-high boots similar to those of the Sailor Senshi, although hers lack the colored trim at the top and hers are dark green. She also has an upside-down black crescent mark as all other Black Moon Clan members do, and also wears earrings made from the Malefic Black Crystal.

Esmeraude later took a different appearance after Wiseman tricked her into wearing a corrupted tiara; she appeared to gain a form that represented how she believed she would look as future Queen alongside Demande, although this was only seen briefly. In this form, she wore a long lavender gown with a dark purple top, which consisted of long sleeves, large spiked shoulderpads, and the tiara, which was black and spike-shaped and adorned with jewels.

Information[]

Esmeraude first appeared in the episode before Rubeus' death, to tell him (with great enthusiasm) that Prince Demande was going to kick him out for his failure. In the following episode, she deliberately left him to die on his ship when it exploded. When Esmeraude took over, she placed several dark wedges in different areas on Earth (given to her by Saphir) and sent several droids to destroy Sailor Moon and capture Chibiusa.

Esmeraude was in love with Prince Demande, but he was in love with Sailor Moon instead, and Esmeraude was jealous of her. At one point, Esmeraude attacked Demande (while staying hidden) with bolts of dark energy to give Sailor Moon a chance to escape from him, to avoid him being distracted by Sailor Moon.

Eventually, Esmeraude went to Wiseman who gave her a crown, saying there was no major difference between her and Sailor Moon. The crown would give her great power and despite her suspicions of a catch, she took it and was transformed into Queen Esmeraude. However, its catch was far greater than she could have imagined, and she was then transformed into a mindless beast.

She was a dragon and went into a vicious rampage. According to Mamoru, the dragon is a physical manifestation of her subconscious mind and thoughts. The five Sailor Senshi fought the dragon, which was eventually destroyed by Sailor Moon using Moon Princess Halation causing the vicious creature to revert to Esmeraude, and then her falling into a dark void to her death. After her death, Wiseman, of all people, said that her laughter always gave him a headache.
