Esmeraude is an alien from Nemesis and a member of the Black Moon Clan. She attacks by throwing dark energy balls, or by shooting bolts of dark energy. This is the original depiction of the character created by Naoko Takeuchi
Nomenclature & Etymology
Esmeraude's name is taken from the obsolete French word for emerald.
Esmeraude has light green hair and light brown eyes. She wears a short sleeveless black dress with matching gloves and boots. Her accessories include black earrings, an emerald necklace, and an emerald bracelet. Additionally, she has a long neck and wide hips.
Esmeraude fought Sailor Moon with her droids Chiral and Achiral when they arrived in Crystal Tokyo. When she didn't succeeded, she tried to use her power of Beast Hand to strangle Chibiusa. She was stopped by Sailor Moon, Sailor Venus, and Tuxedo Mask, and turned her attack on them. Tuxedo Mask then destroyed her using his Tuxedo La Smoking Bomber attack
Sailor Moon R
Esmeraude first appeared in the episode before Rubeus' death, to tell him (with great enthusiasm) that Prince Demande was going to kick him out for his failure. In the following episode, she deliberately left him to die on his ship when it exploded. When Esmeraude took over, she placed several dark wedges in different areas on Earth(given to her by Saphir) and sent several droids to destroy Sailor Moon and capture Chibiusa
Esmeraude was in love with Prince Demande, but he was in love with Sailor Moon instead, and Esmeraude was jealous of her. At one point, Esmeraude attacked Demande (while staying hidden) with bolts of dark energy to give Sailor Moon a chance to escape from him, so as to avoid him being distracted by Sailor Moon.
Eventually Esmeraude went to Wiseman who gave her a crown, saying there was no major difference between her and Sailor Moon. The crown would give her great power and despite her suspicions of a catch, she took it and was transformed into Queen Esmeraude. However, its catch was far greater than she could have imagined, and she was then transformed into a mindless beast.
She was a dragon and went into a vicious rampage. According to Mamoru, the dragon is a physical manifestation of her own subconscious mind and thoughts. The five Sailor Senshi fought the dragon, which was eventually destroyed by Sailor Moon using her Moon Princess Halation attack, causing the vicious creature to revert back to Esmeraude, and then her falling into a dark void to her death. After her death, Wiseman, of all people, said that her laughter always gave him a headache.
In the second anime, Her mission for the Black Moon Clan is Code Extra Operation Re-lax. The Boule Brothers are the droids the serve her. She sends them to attack Sailor Moon and her group when they first arrive in Crystal Tokyo, but they are destroyed by Sailor Venus and Tuxedo Mask. She goes after the group, herself, and almost kills them, but she is destroyed by both Tuxedo Mask and King Endymion with Tuxedo La Smoking Bomber.

- In the Materials Collection, she was referred to as a "high queen with an alluring, booming voice"
- In the DiC dub of the first anime, she was renamed as Emerald.
- Her main weapon was a large, sharp-edged fan to attack and harm her enemies; which implies that she may have be quite skilled and proficient in the martial art of tessenjitsu.
- Esmeraude transformation is the only dragon who ever appears in the original Sailor Moon series.
- She seems to have a fondness for cake, as shown in episode 76.
- Esmeraude in both her human and dragon forms is an optional boss in the video game Sailor Moon: Another Story
- Her rivalry with Rubeus is very similar to that between Shitennou Nephrite and Zoicite.
- She is the second main villain of the Black Moon Clan who was killed by the Sailor Senshi, the first being Rubeus.
