"Crescent Beam" is a light-based attack used by Sailor Venus in all incarnations of Sailor Moon except in Sailor Moon Crystal.

Manga

Crescent Beam first appeared in the first chapter of the Codename: Sailor V manga, "The Birth of Sailor V!". After she caught Narcissus, a member of the Dark Agency, hypnotizing a girl named Haneda as part of her efforts to turn young girls into his slaves, Minako Aino transformed into Sailor V. After engaging in a fight, Sailor V was instructed by Artemis to use her compact to reveal his true form and destroy him. Sailor V cast Crescent Beam with her compact, destroying Narcissus and returning the hypnotized young girls to normal.

When she performed the attack in the Codename: Sailor V manga, Sailor V held her compact to face the enemy, letting its mirrors reflect its true form, and shouted, "Crescent Beam". A flash of light would then emit from the compact, killing or wounding her enemy. In some cases, she would wave the compact in an arc above her head while performing the attack. The mirror in the compact is said to reflect the moonlight at an enemy in order to defeat them.

Crescent Beam was never used in the main Sailor Moon manga.

Anime

The attack first appeared in episode 33. Sailor Venus first used it in order to give Tuxedo Mask a chance to escape from Zoisite's attack. Later in the episode, she used Crescent Beam again to break Kunzite's barrier, freeing Sailor Moon, Sailor Mercury, Sailor Mars, and Sailor Jupiter.

When Sailor Venus performed this attack in the anime, two crescent moons collided above her head before she raised her right index finger up to touch them. She lowered her right arm to point at her target as her left arm came to rest on her elbow, then shot a beam of light from her index finger.

In her initial cameo appearance as Sailor V in the video game, she uses a weapon to perform a Crescent Beam on her enemies.

Live-Action

There is no official Crescent Beam attack in the live-action series, however, there is a similar attack simply called Venus Beam.

Musicals

Sailor Venus used this attack often in the musicals, and there performed it in a similar fashion to the attack sequence in the anime. She raised her finger in the air, then pointed it toward her target to release the attack.

Video Games

Crescent Beam appeared in many Sailor Moon video games. Since all of these games were based on the Sailor Moon anime and manga series, their renditions of Crescent Beam were based on the anime rather than the Codename: Sailor V manga.

Trivia

• In Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon: Another Story, Crescent Beam was referred to as Sailor Venus's "Holy Light," a power capable of causing earthquakes. It was said not to have originally been meant for destruction. In that game, she used it to restore the people of Rias Village who had been turned to stone.
• This attack was not used in Sailor Moon Crystal or the Sailor Moon manga.
