Crescent Beam (クレッセント・ビーム, Kuressento Bīmu) is a light-based attack that is performed by Sailor Venus in Codename: Sailor V and the '90s anime, along with many video games and Sera Myu.

Versions[]

Manga[]

Crescent Beam first appears in the first chapter of the Codename: Sailor V manga, "The Birth of Sailor V!". After she catches Narcissus, a member of the Dark Agency, hypnotizing a girl named Haneda as part of his efforts to turn young girls into his slaves, Minako Aino transforms into Sailor V. After engaging in a fight, Sailor V is instructed by Artemis to use her compact to reveal his true form and destroy him. Sailor V uses Crescent Beam with her compact, destroying Narcissus and returning the hypnotized young girls to normal.

When she performs the attack in the Codename: Sailor V manga, Sailor V holds her compact to face the enemy, letting its mirrors reflect its true form, and shouts, "Crescent Beam." A flash of light emits from the compact, killing or wounding her enemy. In some cases, she waves the compact in an arc above her head while performing the attack. The mirror in the compact reflects the moonlight at an enemy in order to defeat them.

Crescent Beam is never used in the main Sailor Moon manga.

Anime[]

The attack first appears in "Enter Venus, the Last Sailor Guardian." Sailor Venus first uses it in order to give Tuxedo Mask a chance to escape from Zoisite's attack. Later in the episode, she uses Crescent Beam again to break Kunzite's barrier, freeing Sailor Moon, Sailor Mercury, Sailor Mars, and Sailor Jupiter.

When Sailor Venus performs this attack in the anime, two crescent moons collide above her head before she raises her right index finger up to touch them. She lowers her right arm to point at her target as her left arm comes to rest on her elbow, then shoots a beam of light from her index finger.

This attack is later upgraded to Crescent Beam Shower.

In her initial cameo appearance in the Sailor V Game, she uses a weapon to perform Crescent Beam on her enemies.

Live-Action[]

There is no official Crescent Beam attack in the live-action series; however, there is a similar attack called Venus Beam.

Sera Myu[]

Sailor Venus uses this attack often in the musicals, and performs it in a similar fashion to the attack sequence in the anime. She raises her finger in the air, then points it toward her target to release the attack.

Video Games[]

Crescent Beam appears in many Sailor Moon video games. Since all of these games are based on the Sailor Moon anime and manga series, their renditions of Crescent Beam are based on the anime rather than the Codename: Sailor V manga.

Trivia[]

  • The name of the attack refers to the discovery of Galileo, who perceived Venus as going through phases similar to the moon. This may be the reason why Sailor Venus looks similar to Sailor Moon.
  • In Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon: Another Story, Crescent Beam is referred to as Sailor Venus's "Holy Light," a power capable of causing earthquakes. It is said not to have originally been meant for destruction. In that game, she uses it to restore the people of Rias Village who had been turned to stone.
  • This attack is not used in Sailor Moon Crystal or the Sailor Moon manga.
  • In the DiC English dub, the attack's name is "Venus Crescent Beam Smash."
