Akan (アカン, Akan) is an armadillo-like Monster created by Zoisite.
Nomenclature and Etymology[]
Akan's name appears to be a double entendre of the words "aka" (あか; red) and/or the Kansai-ben word "Akan" (明かん; wrong/no good).
His attack is likely a reference to Lake Akan in Hokkaido; famous for its algae that grows into fuzzy balls called "Marimo" (毬藻).
Appearance[]
Akan is a muscular, humanoid Monster with a distinctly alien and menacing design. His body is divided into bold, contrasting colors: deep red limbs and a green torso, giving him a segmented, armored look.
His shoulders are crowned with yellow, spiked armor, resembling jagged pauldrons or organic growths. His head is helmeted, with horn-like protrusions curving upward, and glowing red eyes that radiate hostility. His hands end in sharp, white claws, poised for attack. Three red gem-like nodes also run vertically down his chest.
Powers[]
Akan is able to generate projectile algae balls which grow in size and attach to their victim. When attached, they will continue to grow until the person is fully absorbed inside the algae, slowly suffocating them.
Information[]
Zoisite attempts to turn Naru into a monster, but turns an actor who is playing the sentai Redman into a monster instead, transforming him into Akan. Akan shoots seaweed balls at people, which expand and prevent them from breathing. In the end, he is healed by Sailor Moon using Moon Healing Escalation.
Trivia[]
- This is the only time Zoisite changes anyone into a monster that is not one of the Seven Great Monsters. The other victims are transformed by Kunzite.
- He's the first monster created from a civilian that is not a monster in a past life.
- He is also the first Monster to be healed outside of the Seven Great Monsters.
- Enemies that resemble Akan appear in the video game Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon.
