Ail (エイル, Eiru} also known as Seijuro Ginga (銀河 星十郎, Ginga Seijūrō) is one of the two main antagonists during the Makai Tree arc of the 2nd season of the 90's anime. He is an alien from outer space that temporarily takes up residence in Japan alongside An.

Appearance[]

Alien[]

In his standard alien form, Ail's skin is light green. He has pointy elf-like ears, having one earring on his right ear. His eyes are dark blue, whereas his long hair is a lighter shade of blue with pink streaks on the longer bits of his fringe. He wears a dark blue bodysuit that covers his entire figure, just like An. The highlights in his hair are the same color as An's hair, while her own highlights share the color of Ail's hair.

Human[]

In his human form as Seijuro Ginga, his skin is of an average, fair tone. His hair is orange and relatively shorter; in this form, it reaches his neck. His eyes remain a purplish-blue. The earring on his right ear is also kept.

Personality[]

Ail has occasionally been shown to be a womanizer. Slightly more friendly to others than An, he tends to show a flirtatious side and frequently finds himself attracted to various women despite his relationship with An, which tends to bother her greatly. Ail seems to unconsciously draw women's attraction with the music from his flute, although he doesn't typically seem bothered by their attention.

Although he is bothered by not understanding some aspects of humanity like An, at times he appears to be more inquisitive of their culture; this can be shown in episodes such as Is Seijuro the Moonlight Knight? Mako Falls in Love, where despite not understanding the culture of giving gifts (as it goes against his people's philosophy), he still gives one to An by the end of the episode.

Ail also seems to have somewhat of a competitive streak, particularly against Mamoru, similar to the way Usagi quarrels with An. However, he has a very distorted perception of love and believes that love should be taken forcefully, although by the end of the arc he is able to accept the idea of love being an equal exchange and re-ignites his relationship with An.

Information[]

Background[]

Ail, along with An, came from an alien planet, whose beings depended on the Makai Tree for life. It was the tree that gave life to all the aliens, Ail included. All the aliens on the planet eventually got greedy and fought over the tree among themselves. Ail, along with An, became the only survivors of their race. The tree relocated to earth, in the hope to teach its beings love over greed.

Sailor Moon R[]

Ail and An invaded Earth to drain energy from humans for the Makai Tree. Ail takes the form of a human boy, Seijuro, and attends Juban Public Middle School. He develops a crush on Usagi but keeps this from An.

In Episode 9, Ail began eating food with Makoto, which made An jealous, so she attacked them. This led to the arrival of the Sailor Guardians, and Ail and An sending Cardian Utonberino after them.

In Episode 10, Ail was disappointed that he was not Prince Charming in the Snow White play, and Usagi was not Snow White. He crashed the play (in which An was Snow White and Mamoru was Prince Charming) by sending Cardian Bipierrot to drain energy.

In Episode 11, Ail targets Mamoru to drain his energy for An, who was losing energy while in detention with Usagi.

In Episode 13, Ail and An fought the Sailor Guardians, but Ail protected Usagi from the Makai Tree. He soon came to realize that what they were doing was wrong, and was the first to truly learn the power of love when he saw that Sailor Moon was in love with Mamoru. When An attacked the Moonlight Knight, the Makai Tree whipped Ail with its branches and attempted to stab him, but An took the hit and died of her injuries. The Makai Tree explained to Ail and the Sailor Guardian that it was not evil, and the energy it needed was love energy. After the Makai Tree was healed by Sailor Moon, An was brought back to life by the Tree of Life. Ail and A left with the Makai Tree to start a new, peaceful life with it with the new understanding of real love they have for each other.

Trivia[]

  • The names "Ail" and "An" together are a pun on the word "alien."
  • Ail is skilled at playing a flute, which is presumably from his and Ail's planet; the melody seems to enchant most characters and additionally is used to summon Cardians.
  • Ail is the first male villain to fall in love with Usagi Tsukino, Prince Demande being the second to do so.
  • Ail has a crush on Usagi and tries to confess his love for her several times, although none are successful. In the DiC dub, this is made more blatantly obvious.
  • He and An were the second and third main villains to be reformed, respectively, the first being Nephrite; he and An were the first reformed main villains not to be killed, however.
  • In the DiC English dub, his name was changed to Alan.
    • In the DiC English dub, Ail and An were associated with the Negaverse; coming to Earth after hearing of it from Queen Beryl, while in the original Japanese anime, they were a completely new enemy that isn't even confirmed to know about the Dark Kingdom's existence.
