Act 3 Rei - Sailor Mars (episode)

"Act 3 Rei - Sailor Mars" is the 3rd episode of the 1st season of Sailor Moon Crystal and the 3rd episode overall. It aired in Japan on August 2, 2014, and in North America on November 27, 2015.

Summary

A young woman named Rei Hino possesses exceptionally strong spiritual powers and attracts attention to mothers who angrily accuse her as the one responsible for abducting their children due to her ability to detect supernatural activity. Usagi, however, is intrigued by the young priestess's beauty and goes to meet her. Luna suspects that Rei may be the long-lost princess or even the third Sailor Senshi.

Plot

In the Dark Kingdom, Jadeite is being rebuked by Queen Beryl for his failures. Another warrior, Nephrite, boasts that he could do better. As the warriors gather around the queen, they question as to what the Legendary Silver Crystal is. She informs them it‘s a source of endless energy, the one who has it controls the universe. She gives Jadeite one last chance to redeem himself.

A priestess meditates before a fire, sensing evil is coming.

In class, Umino discusses a Demon Bus that goes through Sendai-Zaka. Rumour says the bus at 6:00 PM is haunted, boarding it means you would disappear never to be seen again.

At the arcade, Luna talks to Ami while Usagi’s distracted. She tells Ami their need to find the princess and the Legendary Silver Crystal. After Usagi wins a level, a prize of watches come out of the machine.

Ami leaves for cram school, Usagi rides the bus with her. Ami tells her of a beautiful girl, Rei from T.A. Girls Academy who takes the bus too. Usagi, entranced by Rei, follows her to Sendai Hill. Rei’s crows attack Usagi, sensing her supernatural presence. Rei apologises for the misunderstanding, wondering why they reacted that way.

Mii’s mom arrives, telling Rei that Mii’s missing and begging for help. Rei suspects the Demon Bus; to ride the Sendai-Zaka route when it pulls up at 6:00 PM, risks being Spirited Away.

The next day at school, there’s word about vanishing buses, which Luna thinks could be the enemy. She urges Usagi to go to the temple again, they take the bus to Sendai Hill. On the bus, Usagi and Luna see Mamoru, who hears her speaking to Luna

Mii’s mom and her friends desperately demand Rei use her abilities to find Mii. They accuse her of causing the disappearances when she refuses. Rei, fed up, yells at the parents to leave the shrine and admits to Usagi that people have always acted coldly towards her because of her spiritual powers.

Rei meditates before her fire at the shrine. In the fire, she sees the enemy on the bus grab Usagi and senses danger. She runs after the bus, realising the driver’s Jadeite from her vision. He attacks her and she falls unconscious.

Usagi and Luna walk down the street, they see the bus pass as Rei lays unconscious inside. Usagi transforms into a stewardess using the Disguise Pen, grabbing onto the disappearing bus. Luna falls off, landing in Tuxedo Mask's arms, who appears due to the commotion as Usagi fades away with the bus.

Jadeite brings his hostages to the Dark Kingdom, luring the Sailor Guardians into a trap. UsagI in the Dark Kingdom, speaks to Luna and Ami through their communicators. Luna tells Usagi to transform as Luna teleports Ami to her position.

Sailor Mercury attacks Jadeite, which turns out to not affect him. Sailor Moon and Sailor Mercury are rendered powerless as Jadeite freezes them, but he’s attacked by Rei. He freezes her hand too, as the Mars symbol appears on her forehead. Luna throws her a pen and tells her to transform. Sailor Mars frees the Sailor Guardians, Sailor Moon performs Moon Tiara Boomerang which traps Jadeite. Sailor Mars performs Evil Spirit, Be Gone. Enveloped by fire, Jadeite vanishes.

Back at the shrine, the victims awaken. Usagi, Ami, and Luna welcome Rei to the team, who‘s happy she has finally gained new friends.

Changes from the Manga

The mothers never accuse Rei of kidnapping their children.
Jadeite is tricked by Sailor Moon into catching her tiara during her attack and Luna uses the computer to trigger the tiara's trapping mechanism.
Haruna makes an appearance at the beginning, where she apologizes for being late and scolds Usagi for having a cat in the classroom and later appears when she advises her students to be careful due to the kidnappings.
Sailor Mars summons Phobos and Deimos when she is fighting Jadeite.
Mamoru visualizes Sailor Moon next to Usagi while on the bus for a brief moment.
Rei never has a vision of the Moon Palace.
Rei does not say the phrase "Mars Power, Make Up" when she transforms for the first time.
Jadeite uses Rei as a shield when he confronts Sailor Moon and Mercury.
Jadeite is burned to death by Sailor Mars, leaving a charred corpse.
When Sailor Mars destroys Jadeite, the area catches fire and the Guardians have to make a quick escape with the victims.

Changes from the 90's Anime

The introduction of Sailor Mars occurred directly after Mercury's debut episode in every version of the series. However, in the anime, there was one filler episode featuring only Sailor Moon and Sailor Mercury before Sailor Mars' introduction episode.
Nephrite, Zoisite, and Yumiko did not appear in this episode.
A Youma drove the bus, rather than Jadeite himself.
Luna never thought that Rei was the Moon Princess.
The kidnapped people were taken to another dimension instead of the Dark Kingdom.
Ami did not transform into Sailor Mercury, so Sailor Mercury did not fight alongside Sailor Moon and Sailor Mars.
Sailor Moon's tiara was not destroyed.
Jadeite did not confront the Sailor Guardians directly, nor did he display freezing powers.
Jadeite never stated that he was attracted to Rei.
